Anyone know the answer to my question?

If a traded player's cap hit is higher than his salary, can the original team retain the portion of the salary that isn't actually paid in real dollars?

I know he can handle it, it's more about having a top pairing where both guys can handle anything, having one pairing which doesn't have a rookie who is being babysat by a vet.

I'd like to see a 74-point player finish in the positives, personally. EK may be able to handle it, but he didn't do a great job of that this past season. He was dynamite offensively, but I saw people score goals when he was within 2 feet of them far too often last season. A bruiser that can get the puck out would be a good partner. Vet or not.

Considering how his season went to go along with how the Sens went I think Karlsson was fantastic.  He controlled the play most of the time when he was out there on a team void of any kind of defensive awareness or responsibility (at least the forwards) so that hurt his +/-.  Not to mention the fact he spent the summer recovering, not training.  Karlsson is a generational talent and you are right, they need to find the right partner for him but I am not convinced it's a vet... hell it could end up being Claeson (as an exmaple).  A guy that comes in, plays the left side, does his job.

The guy who needs guidance on the back end is Cowen... Boyle would be the perfect partner for him and that's an investment that could pay off for 10 plus years after Boyle has hung up the skates.

It sounds like we agree for the most part. EK doesn't need a vet, per se, but he'd be more effective with a real defensive presence paired with him. That way he could drive play and spend most of his time in the O zone, but when the play ends up in the D zone, he'd have the necessary backup.

It's also worth mentioning that he lost a bit off his first stride. If he has that back, people can't breakaway against him. He's just too fast for most to get past him without him catching up 2 strides later.

Yep, his name is Dan Boyle and 3 years/15 million should be offered.

That's a lot of money for a depreciating asset...

Meh, for what he brings I think he's worth it. I don't know where he fits though. We're filled up on the right side with Karlsson, Ceci and Gryba.

I think I've heard this in summer 2010 about another "depreciasting asset" in Ottawa

Of course. Isn't that the franchise that can do no wrong? I heard they're good at drafting and developing talent. They also have cheap subs available near the arena, or so the legend goes.

So the GM meetings are today in NYC. Does Murray finalize the Spezza trade? Rumours out there that Dallas would like Spezza as well.

IF true, two teams in one division fighting over Spezza. Could only mean a better return.

Then there is Anaheim as well..

Glad it's out there, this is the 2nd time Spezza has asked so it's time he gets moved.

The other thing that is out there right now is Chicago going for Thornton... if that happens St.Louis will be paying out the a$$ for someone to play in that first line center role.

Spezza will bring back something solid and the Sens will be better right off the hop for it.

Is Chiasson a good enough return? Don't know much about his offensive potential.
What the Sens need is 2 players of his calibre.

Don't think it's a stretch to get Dallas 1st, Chiasson, and Ritchie/Oleksiak.
