Yeah, that I'd do. Maybe even add Condra + a little something to try to pry Sobotka out of there as well. If we get Berglund, Sobotka and Rattie, we're in good shape.

Also, seeing LA, Wiercioch shouldn't really be moving. They score a lot from the blueline and it clearly works.

Karlsson, Gryba, Wiercioch, Cowen, Ceci - all important pieces. If they get the right offer for Methot, he can go against my better judgement.

Interesting discussion involving one Daniel Friedman (@DFriedmanOnNYI -- followed by Elliotte, possibly related?):

Daniel Friedman ‏@DFriedmanOnNYI

You'd be hard-pressed to find the last team to win a Cup without a legitimate No. 1 center on the roster. It rarely (if ever) happens.

Chris Gatti ‏@cwgatti

@DFriedmanOnNYI Stasny will be a Ranger.

Daniel Friedman ‏@DFriedmanOnNYI

@cwgatti Either him, or maybe they trade for Thornton or Spezza.

Thornton likes California, would he even consider NY?  Spezza on Broadway?  Why not.

Personally I'd prefer Karlsson + vet d-man just so we can have one reliable top pairing. Whether it's Methot or someone else.

NYR is always in the mix... always.

If you are making a trade with NYR I would insist on Stepan as the center piece (no pun intended... now intended) and a guy like JT.Miller... throw in could be a McIlrath.

Very real chance if #sens move Spezza to #blues - Berglund, Paajarvi and Shattock or Hakapaa is the targetted return. Stance on draft fading

Brutal return but at least we get another LHS centreman and we up the Sweden factor on the team to appease EK Smile

Spezza on Broadway would be unreal for the Rangers. The issue though is the Rags don't have the cap space to bring anyone in, let alone retain their current roster. While his salary is low, Spezza carries a cap-hit of $7M which is bad news for the Rangers. I believe they have 13 players (including 2 goalies) signed next year for $62M against the cap.

Key RFAs: Brassard, Zuccarello, Kreider, Falk, Moore
Key UFAs: Boyle, Pouliot, Moore, Carcillo, Stralman, Diaz

I still maintain that the Islanders make more sense for Spezza, especially if they are moving to Brooklyn in another year. His cap hit/salary fits in perfectly with their financial structure, he'd sell tickets there, and he'd be playing with/behind Tavares. The Isles are also prime to make a big move, Spezza was supposed to have been drafted there, and their ownership group needs to make the playoffs in the worst way possible. Their players also fit into our rebuild/financial structure given their moderately priced, termed contracts. I would be content with any combination of Bailey, Grabner, Okposo, Strome, Cizikas, Collberg, Reinhart, 5th overall pick.

Brassard behind Turris would also look pretty solid but you would need more coming back.

We had our chance to land Brassard when he was with CBJ but we passed and ended up getting Turris instead.

It sounds like you're suggesting he's untouchable in NY. I don't think that's the case.

I agree with Neely. Brassard on the 2nd line would be great, but that wouldn't do it on it's own.

I wonder if the Sens could "retain salary" i.e. cap space. That would mean the Sens would "retain" the $3 mil that doesn't actually count in real dollars paid and Spez's $4 mil actual salary would be paid out by NY.

Can they do that in this CBA? That would be a solution.

EDIT: I wrote that in a confusing manner. Basically, Ottawa retains the $3 million that isn't getting paid out (costs them nothing but cap space), and the Rags pay the $4 mil in real money and only get a $4 mil cap hit.

LH center too that has come into his own.  Brassard would probably be just as solid a pickup as Stastny in all honesty... similar in the way they play the game and would fill the same role.

Always liked brassard, but I'd want stepan back. You know the rags will sign Spez, so pony up. Or Hagelin + something. Hagelin is legit. What a neat player.

And zuccarrelo. I'd love to have zuc and Hagelin. Small? Who cares.

Screw a vet for Karlsson, w/e, he can handle things on his own.  The guy they need a vet for is Cowen.

Anyone know the answer to my question?

If a traded player's cap hit is higher than his salary, can the original team retain the portion of the salary that isn't actually paid in real dollars?

I know he can handle it, it's more about having a top pairing where both guys can handle anything, having one pairing which doesn't have a rookie who is being babysat by a vet.

I'd like to see a 74-point player finish in the positives, personally. EK may be able to handle it, but he didn't do a great job of that this past season. He was dynamite offensively, but I saw people score goals when he was within 2 feet of them far too often last season. A bruiser that can get the puck out would be a good partner. Vet or not.
