MacArthur/Turris/Ryan
Berglund/Stastny/Stewart
Hoffman/Zibanejad/Stone
Greening/Smith/Neil
Condra/Da Costa

If Hoffman is traded I might be tempted to put Peumpel in there but he could use another year.  I think Condra also might be a guy that's moved for air.

Looking at that I don't see how that wouldn't be a better group of forwards than they had on Sunday.

You can eliminate him as there's basically zero chance he would sign here.

"The No. 1 change is expected to involve Spezza. The Senators will likely shop him around before the NHL entry draft in Philadelphia. As reported by the Sun, the asking price is player who can help right now, a top prospect and No. 1 pick."

Not sure where he got that from...

St.Louis.  Berglund, Rattie, 1st.

Besides personal opinion what is that based on?  If Ottawa offers him a 7 year deal they have a chance, Ottawa has always been able to sign UFA's like that.

I also totally forgot about Lazar so perhaps the need for a center will not be there.

Um, when? Ottawa never signs big UFAs.

This is an American star forward. Why would he sign here? Especially given they won't break the bank.

The only chance they have is if they overpay him, or if he happened to be courted by Bobby Ryan.

The better bet is trading for a guy with term or an RFA.

Ryan and Statsny did play with each other at the Olympics so who knows.  Ottawa signed Gonchar not long ago who was probably the #1 UFA on the market and Stastny is around the same stature as a Gonchar or even a Kovalev.

All UFA's get over paid a little but with Spezza leaving, the contracts the Smith, Karlsson, Turris, and eventually Lehner will be signed to that's a contract they can afford to front load a little and give him term.  Would anyone be overly upset if Ottawa offered Stastny a 7 year, 40-42 million dollar deal?  Especially if they can get that winger in Stewart who I believe played with Stastny in Colorado and was unreal.  I might be wrong on that though.

Not comparable. You're talking about offering him a 7 year deal, and he's much younger than both of those guys were at the time, and better.

When has Ottawa ever offered a free agent a deal like that?

I wouldn't be mad at all, just saying it's not realistic. I hope you're right.

I think it's realistic for sure, likely?  Maybe, maybe not.  I think they will be in on Stastny and in on him hard, they need a LH center and they need a guy to come in and replace some of the offense Spezza is leaving.  Ottawa will make that player an offer, no question in my mind about that.

I will have to wait the playoffs to see who may be available or not because if Pitts, St Louis and Anaheim and San Jose get bounced in the first round (and it may very well happen) we will see a lot of movement this off season.

For sure and the big prize will be Kessler IMO but Spezza will be right behind him in terms of the player teams are going to want.  I think Stastny does fly under the radar heading into UFA.

If you take Spezza off the roster next year, and factor in new deals for Hoffman ($1M), Gryba ($1M), and Lehner ($3M), the Sens have around $23M in cap space. An obvious priority would be a left winger (MacArthur, Greening, and Hoffman being the current LWs). And then are we comfortable with Turris, Z-Bad, Smith, and Lazar/Pageau/Da Costa down the middle? Probably not, so another C is required. And then we probably want another RW too, since we would have Ryan, Stone, Condra, and Neil. Basically, excluding what we get in return for Spezza, we need to buy an entire second line, and I'm really not confident we're going to spend the $$$ required. #budget

I think it's a forgone conclusion that Stewart is coming to Ottawa so there is the 2nd line RW or LW, I think the keep Stone up with Turris and MacArthur so Ryan moves down to the 2nd line... they need a center there and that's it really.  If it's a guy like Berglund that's pretty solid, people keep throwing out the name Mike Richards so there is another LH center, could sign Stastny... lots of options and fact is the Sens might be a budget team but they still need to spend some money to get to the floor and they have lots of room until they are a mid cap team.

FORWARDS
Clarke MacArthur ($3.250m) / Kyle Turris ($3.500m) / Mark Stone ($0.603m)
Mike Hoffman ($0.900m) / Patrik Berglund ($4.000m) / Bobby Ryan ($5.100m)
Curtis Lazar ($.800m) /  Mika Zibanejad ($0.894m) / Chris Stewart ($4.150m)
Colin Greening ($2.650m) / Zack Smith ($1.888m) / Chris Neil ($1.900m)

Erik Karlsson ($6.500m) / Jared Cowen ($3.100m)

------
CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(estimations for 2014-15)
SALARY CAP: $71,100,000; CAP PAYROLL: $52,894,417; BONUSES: $1,595,000
CAP SPACE (23-man roster): $18,205,583

Is that really that far out there in terms of what the Sens will actually spend and what their team could be? Even the biggest critic of Melnyk knows he is going to spend in the mid 50's and I would think around 57 mil is pretty close to what the actual payroll will be.

Please...we need to stop penciling in Stastny on the 2nd line. We're not getting him - and if we do, then we look at the revamped roster.

I'd be just happy with Turris-Berglund

Berglund was primed for a breakout a year or two ago. On a more open team he would be better.
