really? what did we end up getting for Havlat? Why didn't he make that deal? I guess at that time though Toskala was still an unknown....

We got Josh Hennessy, Priessing for a year, and a pick I believe.

It was in this years draft I think. 2nd rounder or something.

Yeah. That was a much better deal than getting Toskala. Freakin' Muckler.

Havlat might be available at the deadline this year.

Hennessy for Havlat.

Toskala has a great contract and is an upgrade.

I suppose I'd support the proposed trade. What do you think of it Aetherial?

Since LONG before the past year (since way back when McCabe was having a huge season and the trade deadline was here)... I went on record as saying that I would keep NONE of the Leafs if the right deal came along and I would have sold McCabe to the highest bidder at that deadline and he would have fetched a LOT. My attitude was the same with Tucker the next year.

I say this so there is context to my response.

I have long, since before anyone else I saw say in public, been in favor of trading away any veteran asset for youth and picks.

There is a lot of arguement among Leafs fans of getting rid of Toskala. My position is simple, this team is years away from contending and Toskala is not going to be around when they do, or at least he won't be the goalie he is now.

So why keep him?

Am I in favor of an Ottawa deal, sure, but only if it is the best deal out there. I highly suspect a few teams would be interested in making sweet deals for him. Sure, we would have to take back some cap space (like we would have to take back Gerber), but that doesn't concern me at all since I don't advocate spending money on FA's for a few years anyway (unless by some wild fluke a young, franchise player becomes a UFA).

Like I said, I would consider Zubov or Lee + 2nd, or + (Gerber and a first) depending on what other teams offered. I bet Colorado would make a nice pitch Smile

Isn't that pick Patrick Weircoch? And he's leading his team in points - over Colbourne, the first round selection of the Bruins last I heard (yesterday :D ). That pick could make up for a lot. Not everything, but a lot.

We're all over that Aetherial. Either scenario works. I doubt the Leafs are excited, but we would be.

I agree Aetherial. It makes no sense for the Leafs to hold on to anyone over the age of 26 I'd say. What's the point?

So I looked into that Havlat deal and got the details:

Per the 6th Sens (great blog):

"Martin Havlat: Mach-9 was dealt by Muckler in exchange for Michal Barinka, Josh Hennessey, Tom Preissing and a 2nd round pick (Patrick Wiercoch). After dismissing a Vesa Toskala for Havlat package, this is prize that Mucks landed. Prize indeed. Here's hoping that Wiercoch turns into something special. Through 6 games this season, Havlat's put up two goals and three assists."

If memory serves, Barinka was looking promising but then had to leave for Europe for "personal reasons" and is no longer affiliated with the Senators as far as I could tell, Preissing is in LA, Hennessey is looking like a bust, and all we have to show for it is Wiercoch.

Wiercoch sounds familiar. Is he from SF? @Heater: awesome to hear!

@Aetherial: I'd do that trade. Zubov + 2nd or Gerber + 1st sound fair to me.

True, but like he also said- if Toskala is on the market, there's alot more than just the Sens interested- and there are alot more attractive packages that will be offered. Colorado's 1st may be a little more attractive than ours, especially if packaged with some young prospects)

Wiercioch will be a stud. He would have been drafted way higher had he not been injured for most of the year leading up to the draft. I've heard a scout say that after he returned he was the best player (dman or otherwise) in his league. He's going to end up being a nice sleeper pick considering.

Nice! I know another player who was injured his draft year and turned out to be OK.

On a totally unrelated note, Alfie is a god!!

I think Toronto should try to trade Toskala sooner than later. Here's why. Toronto isn't a team that is likely going to win, nor should they try to win. That is counterproductive. Toskala is a great goalie, and playing on a horrific team. You can't expect that he will put up impressive numbers this season, and it could hurt his value.

Also, he was replaced for the shootout by CuJo, who went on to lose the game.

Perhaps that was a move to try and lose the game? Putting in a 40+ year old goalie, coming in off the bench after 65 minutes? Wilson listening to Fletcher to throw the game?
