Toskala has a great contract and is an upgrade.
I suppose I'd support the proposed trade. What do you think of it Aetherial?
Since LONG before the past year (since way back when McCabe was having a huge season and the trade deadline was here)... I went on record as saying that I would keep NONE of the Leafs if the right deal came along and I would have sold McCabe to the highest bidder at that deadline and he would have fetched a LOT. My attitude was the same with Tucker the next year.
I say this so there is context to my response.
I have long, since before anyone else I saw say in public, been in favor of trading away any veteran asset for youth and picks.
There is a lot of arguement among Leafs fans of getting rid of Toskala. My position is simple, this team is years away from contending and Toskala is not going to be around when they do, or at least he won't be the goalie he is now.
So why keep him?
Am I in favor of an Ottawa deal, sure, but only if it is the best deal out there. I highly suspect a few teams would be interested in making sweet deals for him. Sure, we would have to take back some cap space (like we would have to take back Gerber), but that doesn't concern me at all since I don't advocate spending money on FA's for a few years anyway (unless by some wild fluke a young, franchise player becomes a UFA).
Like I said, I would consider Zubov or Lee + 2nd, or + (Gerber and a first) depending on what other teams offered. I bet Colorado would make a nice pitch
