Never heard of that before.  Neat.

Read on to find out how the Yzerman trade could have erased the ugly Nieuwendyk on Lalime goals from playoff history.
No Hossa though and no Chris Phillips. No way anyone can predict what could have happened... could have been better and could have been worse. Also no Spezza and Chara.

All that crap about Yzerman only being truly great when he scored less and paid more attention to both ends of the ice is bull. Fact is, Detroit bought him a supporting cast and some even surpassed him by the time they were winning cups. So, yeah, without the support in Ottawa it may not have worked out.

I'm not even convinced Ottawa is a better team 3, 4 years down the line if they make that trade and they certainly would not have won a cup with JUST those two. Either way, it didn't happen.

They were drafting well around that time so there's that. I don't think Yzerman alone would have affected their draft position either way at the time but whatever.

Those were cool times when you just hear about Havlat being the best player not in the NHL or the same for Hossa because there was no video or even scores readily available to track these guys. Memories.

And continuing the trip down memory lane...I found this old HF post that details all of the UNPROTECTED players in the 1992 expansion draft. Some very interesting names on the list, hindsight being 20/20.

Also, a pile of former/current hockey coaches/execs/personalities, including: John Ferguson Jr, Peter Laviolette, Alain Vigneault, Randy Carlyle, Dallas Eakins, Pat Conacher, Bill Berg. Just think, all these numpties could've played for our Senators!

Plus, there's a bunch of talent that went undrafted...Joe Mullen, Viacheslav Fetisov, etc.

They actually traded for Bill Berg a few years later. Steve Thomas was practically begging to come to Ottawa around the same time and they were too cheap to get him. Dave Hannan was another bargain addition around that time...

Also down memory lane, we drafted Dustin Byfuglien's half-brother, Derrick, in 2000.

In 2002, we failed to draft a single guy who would be a legit NHLer. Jakub Klepis and Kaigorodov were the closest we got. Duncan Keith went 54th overall that year!

We took Colin Greening in the 7th round in 2005! The next year, we took Erik Condra in the 7th round!

Ottawa's PP has 0 goals in 5 attempts and sits 28th in the NHL.. That's not good either.

Why does Dave Cameron have a job. The PP sucked big time last season.. albeit with their best players out of the lineup..

It's 2 games in, lol. PP % is absolutely the most useless stat along with PK %. Their PP last year not being great may have had something to do with Karlsson, Spezza, and Michalek all being out.

Their PP is 0% and that's 28th? Are the bottom two teams below zero?

Maybe they've allowed shorties?

I actually liked the way their PP looked against Buffalo. It just needs time and healthy players.

I think Lehner gets the game against the Sharks, and Matrix goes against the Ducks.

I say the other way around, think you gotta go right back with Anderson and then give Lehner the game Sunday.

Sharks will destroy us. Maybe give Andy a soft start to regain his confidence.

The Sharks won't destroy us. They are due for a low scoring affair

I know it's early, but PP opportunities are a bit of a joke. Florida is one of the worst teams in the league and they are leading with 21 PP opportunities -- only scored the one tie. Toronto also has 21. What's going on here? The highly skilled teams should be drawing the majority of the calls, since holding/hooking infractions are supposed to be called all the time to speed the game up. That doesn't explain Florida, does it? And Toronto is known to be a team that finishes every check and not a team known for high-end skill.

On the other hand, you know where Pittsburgh sits? Second last, that's where.

You'd think that the zebras are trying to make the games more competitive by giving the weaker teams more PP opportunities while telling the higher-skill teams to "play through" the checking. Then there's Toronto but we all know the bias.
