Wouldn't even have to stoop that low -- I could get a halfway decent Asus for $99.  It just doesn't have bluetooth (which they won't really care about), or a rear-facing camera (this they *will* care about).

OK so a Coby or Polaroid must be 50 bucks or less.

Actually I just read a somewhat favorable review of the newest Coby tablet(s):
http://liliputing.com/2013/04/coby-mid8065-8-android-tablet-review.html

It'll take more than one good review for me, though. I do (did?) have some Coby products in the house, but nothing approaching $200.

Nexus 7 is the clear choice though. $229 for the top of the line Android experience.

It all depends on your needs/wants. The girls couldn't care less about the difference in the screen. Not at age 10. But having a 5 MP camera so they can play Video Star or whatever the equivalent is for Android, is almost a must-have.

I'll probably eventually get myself a Nexus. But for the girls, for now, I ended up getting the Acer Iconia A1-810. Went to FS and BB to see if they were willing to move on the price -- not a price match, per se, but if they dropped it $35 (from the $230 price) then it would have been very close to what I could get at B&H (when all fees and exchange rate are considered). They were not willing, so I just ordered it on my BB. I should have have pre-loaded everything so that a single click would send the order, then done it right in front of the salesman. Maybe next time.

I don't understand. The Nexus 7 has a 5MP camera as well.

Oh, you're right -- the new one comes with a 5MP rear camera. That's not the one that's shipping now (it's available on the 30th), and it's way out of my price range (FS/BB have it advertized at $270).

By the way, while I was checking the specs just now I saw that the Nexus is also sold directly from Google Play store and for a better price. The current model (which sells for $230 at BB) is only $209 (not $209.99) with free shipping. So get it there or try to get BB/FS to price match it to save $2.10 (they ay balk at it even though Google Play sells to both sides of the border).

The new one is available for pre-order starting at $229 (for the 16 GB one). It's not available for Canada, though. Not sure what the hold up is, but I assume it will eventually be available. The newer Nexus 7 as the above-mentioned camera as well as 4G LTE. Now, does that mean I can take the SIM car from my Presiden't Choice phone and stick it in the Nexus 7?

Move to Pennsylvania. My kids get a free 32gb Ipad mini each to use for the duration of their time in school. PA has done away with hard cover textbooks and have put everything on the ipads. (They're not locked down either.) They get a new one every 2 years and we are allowed to buy the end of cycle units at a large discount.

You can get the original Kindle fire on sale here for $99. Crack that sucker!

You can also get Burger King mix and match for 5 bucks instead of the 6 bucks we have to pay.

If Candle made tablets, they would have chrome and wood grain accents.

Funny, I recall when our boys were young, thinking how by the time they get to highschool they would probably do away with physical books and just have laptops and the text books would be in some kind of electronic format. Yet here is my oldest, just finished grade 11, and he's still lugging a backpack that must weight over 20 lbs.

It's a shame they still haven't gone paperless in schools.

Make a custom skin, call it "Candle" and see if anyone gets it.

Probably another reason I pay $5000 a year in school taxes too....

Is 7 inches too small? Really considering getting the Nexus 7 but might hold out for the new iPad mini. I already have a Nexus 4 phone, so it's basically the same thing expect 2.3 inches longer.

I find the girls' tablets (7.9" screen) a bit bulky, frankly. Mind you the Acer has quite a wide bezel/frame around the screen which doesn't help. For watching video holding the thing inches away from your face, 7" is plenty. For browsing it can be iffy but that could also be the browser -- using chrome and entering form data was challenging as the form competed with the other info on the web page and the keyboard for screen real-estate. Not sure if that was chrome's fault or the web page or what. 10" would most likely be better; same for editing docs.
