He may as well have missed half of the previous season as he was ineffective until he had that surgery.  He's received a couple concussions, he was slowing down and becoming more susceptible of getting caught more.  The guy's turning 41 and his body has taken a lot of abuse over the years.  He's not quite as gentlemanly as Teemu Selanne.

Fact: That old geezer Alfie lead us in playoff scoring this past year...10 pts in 10 games.

He's getting older and geezier, and after 82 games instead of 48, how do you think his older, geezier body will do?

In a lockout shortened season. I wonder how we'll hold up over 82 games.

You're right. This past season looked like a walk in the park with games every second night and all.

I'm sure if he played for Ottawa we'd say "he keeps himself in great shape" and he "might have 2 seasons left in him."

Wow. I'm mad at alfie too folks, but to write him off as 'old' and 'geezer' is pathetic. You guys remember that he was by far our best player in the playoffs right?

The man still has plenty of game left and will arguably be better than most of our team save for 2 or 3 players.

If he still played for Ottawa we'd be hoping he has 1-2 seasons in him and that he plays great. Now that he plays for Detroit we hope the opposite.

Ultimately he is getting older and that's not exactly increasing his chances. Hard to tell how he'll play over 82 games.

Same was said about Selanne, and he fell off this past year.

Alfredsson wasn't out best player in the playoffs IMO. Several guys (Condra, Pageau, Turris) were better

Nah, I still love the guy and hope he has a great year.

None of the three you mentioned were better than alfie. NONE. Sorry, the only guy I'm willing to consider is anderson, and he too shat the bed in the 2nd round. Alfie competed hard every shift against best defensive pairing and helped create two clutch scenarios in the last minute of play. He also lead in points, needless to say. How people can still say that he wasn't our best player is beyond me.

I kind of do as well but even if he re-signed with us I'd still be concerned how he'd hold up over 82 games.

There is no way of knowing.

Probably because he checked out after Game 4

Yeah I don't know what to take from those comments he made.  Knew it wasn't right immediately when he said it.  However if he indeed did check out after game 4, can't say the rest of the team was checking 'in' either.  still doesn't mean he wasn't there best player.

ppl are just trying to throw him under the bus more because he left.  Simple as that.  I'm pissed that he left, I'm pissed at the way he left too. But no way am I going to go back and say 'well actually he's an old geezer, we don't need him'

He is old though, what more can you say? He'll likely have a nice season for Detroit, but this is not a guy with 5 years left, nor is it a huge impact player anymore.

I'm not gonna say "we don't need him", but we certainly need Bobby Ryan more. No brainer.

I can't believe we're still talking bout this. People really take hockey too personal.

Yeah, I'm as big a fan as anyone - and I was a massive Alfie fan, but what's done is done and we have a great, young team. Don't see how people are still dwelling, but whatever's the best therapy I guess.

Daniel Alfredsson: 1972 - 2013.

Let's move on.

It boils down to he didn't think his teammates were good enough to win.. Which I guess was the case. But they may have given the Pens a better run for their money if Spezza, Karlsson, Cowen & Michalek were healthy.

I wonder how his former teammates feel now.. with his comment that he has a better chance to win in Detroit. He just about said the same thing again -- this team is not good enough to win the Cup.

I love Alfie and wish him success.. but not against Ottawa. I hope the Sens do better this season than Detroit.

He was the past -- we have to look forward to the future... without him.. sad to say.

I'm willing to move on, no problems. But it's like people are so mad, they're trying to completely discount what he used to be or what he did for the team. Like convincing yourself that he was bad news as it is. That's wrong. Just move on people, no need for more shots at alfie, let alone false statements.
