I'm sure he isn't serious. Cowen will get $2M+ without question.
I am dead serious.  Weircioch has played a grand total of 50 NHL games and has no arbitration rights.  Cowen has a whopping 90 NHL games and 3 AHL games and another 27 combined playoff games, which means he has a total of 120 professional games and people want to pay him 3.5M coming off his second major injury.  I like the 2 guys, but people here act like John Ferguson JR.  It's ridiculous.  Let the system work for you, no arb rights and nothing proving as a pro yet earns you about 10% raise in my books.  Let them cash in on their 3rd contracts.

If you want to turn this into an argument between $3.5M or anything approaching Hamonic, and $2.5M, then fine, let's do that, but you'll find that most of us no-longer think he will be getting that money.  As you said, he's got no arbitration rights.

However you said give him $1.25M x 2.   As for Wiercioch, I think you are way off base if you think he'd get a slight increase on his QO.  0.5 PPG rookie D-man on a team in the bottom five in the league in G/G.
Weircioch has played 3 months of NHL hockey, only a GM who wants to be fired would say that is a fair sample size to base a future contract on.

$2M isn't the same as $3.5M. Just saying. It's easy to defeat an argument that you exaggerate.
There are a few on this site saying sign him to a 7 year deal at 3.5M.  Regardless, what has he done to earn a 2M contract?  He has potential, but he has not accomplished anything yet.

I'd give him 7 years at 3.5 without thinking twice.
Can you imagine if Subban took 5 MIllion on a 7 year deal? habs would be laughing hysterically. Now, they will have to give him close to 7Million.

Really?  I honestly don't think anyone meant to say that.  We said Hamonic is his comparable, but for the amount, not term.  With his injury issues I don't think anything more than 2 years is prudent.  And since he won't be giving up any UFA years, and since he has no arbitration rights, $3.5M is also out.

Edit: Really, please show even one person saying that.

We're not talking about Karlsson, here. Let's see what the Habs give Emelin before we make that analogy.

Cowen has one full season and two major surgeries. 7 year term would be ridiculous at any amount.

If you don't believe in him becoming a better player than a 3.5M player in the next few years then your expectations are very low for a behemoth who has top pairing potential.
What's the worst that can happen, he takes 3.5M cap hit and is a bottom pairing defenseman? Big Cussing deal, guess what that's what Chris Philips is and he is paid more.

Why is Cowen an RFA right now? I don't think we explored that. I read somewhere that because of this, he won't become a UFA for another 4 seasons as opposed to 3.

I'd give him 7 years, 3.5 million no problem at all. The only knock on Cowen is his injury history - and they were two different injuries, it's not like it's the same knee a la Michalek.

I'd love to lock him down for 7 or 8 years. Yet another piece we don't have to worry about for a long time.

$24,5M vs $65M? Really?

Doesn't matter if they want to be fired or not -- if they want the GM's job they have to give him his next contract, and they have 3 months' worth of games to look at to determine what he's worth. That's Bryan's job.

The player/agent, on the other hand, will look at what others who are comparable have gotten. It'll take a bit of time to find a player who only has 42 games in rookie season, with 19 points on a team that cannot score. But when they find that player, I'm sure their second contract was better than 8.8% more than their QO.

If you want to compare, Smith has 15 points in 48 NHL games; Wiercioch has 21 in 50. The PPG pace is 34% higher for Wiercioch.

Fun with numbers.

I'd say $1.5 x 2, maybe even more if they can still do performance based bonuses.

What a silly thing to say. He needs a new contract. They have nothing other than this sample size on which to base the new contract. What should they do? Ask him to play for free for a few years so that they really know what they're getting?

Either a 1 or 2 year contract with a 10% raise. I don't know why people think he should earn 1.5M or something ridiculous like that.

Not a comparable when you take into account that Smith was arbitration eligible and Wiercioch is not.

No bonuses allowed except on ELCs and 35+ 1 year deals.
