Well we'll see what happens now.  The NHL may force Melnyk to sell or take on additional partners.  New Jersey was in trouble but I think they sorted that out.

I don't want to trigger some firesale and have the team trade Karlsson for draft picks or some Dung.  Hopefully now that Eugene's money problems are public we'll have a solution quickly.

Alfie has been waiting for the team to come up to his level. He stopped waiting today.

Great team? They had a great leader who helped a decent team drag it's Donkey to the playoffs. Sure, maybe this all works out in the end but they better figure out how they came to these decisions.

"Some point" shouldn't have been today. "Some point" should have come with retirement from playing in the NHL. And this team should have been given a better opportunity to win with him with the end in sight.

Eugene's bank account has run dry.  Tom Hicks went belly up in Dallas and they lost players too.  Happened to other teams and other sports leagues as well.

What the Diddle can we do except hope that this ownership mess gets resolved quickly before the team loses any more players?

Give it a couple of minutes' thought, though. Alfie was a great "lead-by-example guy. But few followed, and that's the truth. I wonder what kind of leader Spezza will make or, maybe, with Alfie out of there several others emerge to fill the void. I honestly think Spezza has leadership qualities that have not yet been tapped. No matter what, we can all agree that this is a huge change in the room. But it doesn't necessarily mean it's a change for the worse.

Remember, Alfie was not a saint. He had bad moments (breaking his stick and stomping on the water bottle last year, saying "probably not" this year, shooting the puck at Niedermayer in '07, sitting out for a better contract early on in his career).

It's time to move on and hope for the best.
