Okay, you tell me why I'm sending a young C with untapped upside, signed to a 1.8 million long term contract for an ultra fragile winger, in the final year of his contract making 5.5 million dollars.

I'm all ears.

Whaaaaaat?  He's a 3rd, 4th line center.  Untapped potential?  To be what? They wanted him to be a shut down center and he's no where being ready enough to go against top competition.  Smith for Hemsky is a layup deal.

I don't like Z.Smith right now, perhaps we should get that straight, but even with that said there's no way I'd move him for a rental like Hemsky. Don't see why you would. Go out into free agency and make a serious pitch for someone that doesn't cost you assets, then move Smith + for a D-man, but don't mismanage your assets.

Jesus, not to mention Hemsky is due 5.5 million in actual dollars as well as cap hit. There's no friggin way I'd do that and I'm near positive Murray's not that short sighted.

He's not going to get a top-6 forward for much ess unless he gets a young player on an ELC, and those are almost never on the market.

Just sign Briere and try to trade for a D-man using Smith. I have to say, I'm surprised to hear people willing to trade Smith for a broken player who also happens to be a rental.

1) how much do you think Briere will get on the market ?
2) Not sure why Hemsky is a "broken player" but a 35-year old Briere and his concussion history are not
3) Smith isn't going to get you the kind of D-man we need, not on his own anyway.

Hemsky is about equal to Briere to me.  Maybe more injury prone but younger he could easily bounce back here.

In this scenario we don't have to give anything up for Briere + Briere is a leader and Hemsky really isn't.

Remember last off-season when we almost landed Hjalrmasson for Smith? Why couldn't we try to do something like that again?

Smith is what he is, which is fine but easily replaced.  You are seriously undervaluing skill and speed.

I don't think it's that cut and dried. Smith is an asset, whether we like him here or not. It's why we almost moved him for Hjarlmasson last off season and it's why teams continue to inquire about him. You want to move that asset for a pending UFA? Even if Hemsky wasn't a pending UFA, @ 5.5 million a throw, you want to invest in that?

Let them draft their own asset, give them a 3rd rounder + O'Brien + Da Costa and tell them you're gonna eat the entire 5.5 million, but don't move an asset that could be used to shore up the D for Hemsky. It's just not great asset management IMO.

The deal is probably on the table as we speak. We don't know who's involved and who isn't, but I'll be the first to come in here and eat crow and tell you you're right if it's Smith for Hemsky - if it's even Ottawa who ends up making the final play for him.

You get a lot softer trading Smith and getting Hemsky.

Remember the top 3 teams in each division get in the playoffs.  Then there is a 'one game playoff for the 4th spot' -- am I correct on that?

So Boston, Detroit, Toronto, Mtl, Ott and maybe Tampa are probably the teams fighting for those spots.  2 of those have really big mean and tough hitting teams.

The Sens would end up with Neil and maybe Greening as forwards that play physical with Methot & Cowen on the back end as the mostly only physical players in the lineup.  Sorry that's not good enough to even get to the division semi-final.

how do we know there's a deal on the table? because BM was seen talking to MacT? that could be about something else entirely. (which is what i'm hoping)

Because it makes a lot of sense from both teams POV. Unless the Oilers think they can get more than what Murray's offering - which we don't even know what it is lol - then, I'd say Ottawa's a pretty fair landing place for Hemsky.

Mind you, there's a ton of other options out there. Probably options we can't even fathom, so we'll see what actually happens.

I said several times it was a rumour. It was everywhere for a couple of weeks, I'd say where there's smoke there's likely some fire.

We're gonna need way more than adding players to look as good as those 2 teams playing right now. Like years of chemistry building.

as i'm sure there's a few GM's in need of cap space i'm sure BM is talking to several GM's, doesn't mean he gets an offfer for anyone he really wants.

We should have a decent base to build on with the Bingo crowd in there.
