What if they don't think he will be anything more than a 3rd line winger?  It's not as easy as saying "yah, you make that trade".  If they like him and want him then sure, make it right away because chances are you will not get a player like him with the 17th... but if they think it will be an issue having him in the organization they why would you trade it?

Fact is I think it's more likely they deal a guy like Stone instead of the pick.

I think I would too.  Whether he's NHL ready or not, if sens don't have the player they want, why not make that deal? May need to add to it though.

I don't see why him being NHL ready would be a factor since the 17th pick will not be NHL ready. Rundbald wasn't NHL ready. I too agree that it would take more than a 17th to nab him.

Filatov wasn't NHL ready and basically refused to play in the AHL... what if it's the same deal? Again, it's not black and white.  Rundblad was happy playing in Sweden.

What do we need with another forward prospect with zero NHL success?    I think we're passed that, we need a goal scoring forward, not another project.

Again, not that black and white either.  If they think he can come in and contribute next year at the NHL level why would you not make a deal for the kid?   LH shot, big, fast, has a scoring touch, everything is there for him to be a solid top 6 forward for a decade.

Yeah. Nothing's a sure thing anyway. Bobby Ryan could just as well be a bust here too.

Haha I would bet on him scoring 30 most years until he's 30 though... either way the point is correct.

considering we went hard after Rick Nash, and the news from SSF saying Howson thought the sens had the best deal for Nash means we can't rely on getting a proven scorer anymore because established players just don't want to be in ottawa. Simple as that. It's looking more and more like bobby ryan wants to be in philadelphia, so do you really want to take that risk?

Who else is there? Don't think we'll be pulling off any trade for an established scorer. Really depends on what our scouts think of El Nino but he's a guy who's played in N. America for so long. He's not another filatov

Even though there is no reason to believe he will be traded the guy that fits the Sens system and holes like a glove is Eriksson from Dallas.  LH shot, fast, smart, just a really solid hockey player that's a legit top 3 forward.  As for Ryan and any other player that may come to Ottawa that people have preconceived notions about, it all depends on the individual.  Nash had a NTC and basically had 1 or 2 spots he would play and NYR in the end was the place he wanted to go, simple as that.

If you trade the pick, then it's essentially swapping a really young prospect for a guy that's further along and is a bit more of a known entity (having already played professional hockey in North America). It's not like we're trading a Silf or ZBad for Nino...that'd be another discussion.

Based on all talk and speculation I would be willing to bet Ottawa drafts at #17.

Depends on who we pick, for my money I would bet on Monahan being more NHL ready than Niederreiter

Monahan won't be available at #17, but I see your point.

Yeah, no. He's defensively challenged and plays a weak game. No thanks unless he's really come a long way. And there's no reason to suggest he had.

If that's the conclusion the Sens and Murray have come to about the guy then yup, you skip on him.

Yeah Nino Niederreiter, the gritty goal-scoring winger who plays a 200-foot game.
