Apparently this Weber is the best on the market for electric grills:

Trust me and get a Weber.

Does it produce a ton of smoke? We have an egg at home and that produces a ton, just wondering if it's similar.

If you're just cooking with regular charcoal, it doesn't produce a ton of smoke.  It also depends if you're cooking "direct" or "indirect".  Direct means your food is right over the hot coals, indirect means it's more just like an oven, where your coals are piled on one side and your food is on the other, not directly over them.  If your food is directly over the coals (like when you're searing steaks), the juices and stuff dripping on the coals produces a bit more smoke, but nothing crazy.

If you decide to add wood chips/chunks for more smoky deliciousness, it will obviously create more smoke.

I guess the other issue is actually lighting the charcoal.  Depending on your method of lighting (i.e. charcoal chimney), a lot of smoke can be produced.  I have the Weber Performer (http://www.rona.ca/en/charcoal-barbecue-16665696?gclid=CP3D0JDmyb4CFZFufgodPYcAwg), so it has integrated gas-assist lighting, but it might be a little big for your purposes.

Are you legally allowed to have a charcoal BBQ?

I'll be checking that out in the next couple of days. You are legally allowed to use any type of BBQ in Ottawa, however it is up to the condo board to regulate for their specific building. Most ban propane and gas (unless you have a gas hookup to the unit). I will have to see if charcoal is an option. Regardless I would probably just get that Weber electric or whatever is the best on the market in two years, when I move in.

I've never used an electric one, but flavour wise it wouldn't be any different really than cooking with gas.  Might be your best bet.

I would personally recommend somewhere west of downtown with the construction on the 417 scheduled to be done this fall it will be far better than trying to commute from the South or East of downtown. Unless of course you're planning on living right downtown. I live 7 minutes from the CTC and about 4 km from the 417.

The difference I see is you aren't getting an open flame, so maybe not as much char or grilled flavour. Either way, I'm not too picky. There will probably be an unreal electric on the market then, if not the Weber gets really hot and has really great reviews.

Are you replying to me? If so I just bought west of downtown in Hintonburg.  Smile

You're in Carp, aren't you?  I'm in Stittsville (Bryanston Gate), about 3 minutes from CTC.

I'm technically considered to be in Carp but I'm not actually in the village.

I just had some apple cider brined charcoal-grilled pork chops.  Delicious.

Man there's so many restaurants near my place, I'm gonna get bigger and my wallet will get lighter.

Yeah, the temptation to eat out is huge...so expensive though.  Good luck.

I have a random issue. I broke the Dung out of my right thumb playing softball and required surgery on it. So my participation has been limited on these forums for the past two weeks and will continue to be limited until I get this Cussing cast off.

Get a mic and you can probably find some free voice-to-text app.
