We're not at all blessed with guys who can move around. Have you ever seen Gonchar play the left side? Not great. these guys can't move around and be as effective, period.

That sucks. I thought we had something magical happening here.

We might have something special, but D-men playing both sides is not one of them.

At once?!?!?! That would be special for sure.

Despite your joking around, I think you know exactly how hard it is to find a player who is adept at playing either the right or the left side. It's an instant handicap to an already tough position to play.

I think it's a consideration for sure but it gets really overblown here.

Some nerd on HF was saying that Dallas is tinkering with the idea of trading Morrow. He sounds like someone who would be a fit.

This post sums it up right here. Overblown is an understatement....like come on as if one of our current left-handed d-men actually get sit down because a newcomer is also lefty. They may switch sides but the fact that 'sitting them down' is the option really overblows the whole debate.

As for the newcomer playing 3rd pairing minutes, everyone misses the point of that person making a huge contribution on the PK. We need big bodies blocking shots (and being physical) especially in the playoffs. Anyone seen our PK numbers? Nothing to be impressed by.

These are some of the guys that I think we'll look at, however, because there's very limited supplies of players available - especially for a low level, 3rd pairing, hard-hitting, shot blocker, the prices are quite high. All prices are IMO.

Milan Jurcina - UFA - Isles - major hitter, ~100 in 37 games, 65 BS - Cost - 3rd round pick IMO

Steve Staios - UFA - Isles - decent hitter, good shot blocks (37 GP, 36H, 72BS) - Cost - 3rd rounder

Bryan Allen - UFA - Carolina - 50GP, 66 hits, 110 BS - Cost - 2nd rounder

Tim Gleason - price prohibitive + didn't want to play in Canada

Pavel Kubina - UFA - TB - 50 GP, 75 hits, 75 BS - Cost - 2nd rounder

Andy Sutton - UFA - Edmonton - 29 games, 49 hits, 51 BS - Cost - 4th round pick +

Scott Hannan - UFA - 45GP, 34 hits, 79 BS - Cost - 4th round pick

Realistically don't see anyone else worth even mentioning.

Hal Gill has 36 hits and 107 BS in 43 games. he's also a UFA....he is very worthy of your list. My guess is cost would be 3rd rounder but I could easily see Pitts give up a 2nd to get him back.

I'm nervous about a)dealing with Montreal and b)I still think Gill sucks, I'd rather have Carkner (I think).

No, no you would not.

Let me rephrase: I'd rather the Carkner of last year than Hal Gill. Will he ever be back to Carkner of last year? Who knows...

Derek Roy on the block in a BIG way apparently. Dreger says that Montreal has significant interest in him, but sites the fact that it would be an inter-division trade.

Also having interest: Minnesota (probably because PM Bouchard is out with a concussion...again).

John Shannon also said today that he'd heard Chicago and Detroit are in the mix.

Suffice to say if the Sabres get four offers, Montreal will be the loser of this sweeps (will there be a winner? Sarcasm )

meh fair enough...doesn't mean he's not worthy of discussion. We'll see I guess but there's much to be said about past cup winners. There's a reason Pittsburgh will target him as well.

how anyone can take a goon like Matt Carkner over a solid, Cup winning, 1000+ game big d-manlike Gill is beyond me.

Uhhhh, what?

Seriously, some of your views on some players are unreal. Gil won a cup and was a HUGE part of it. Pitts does not win that cup without Gil. What does he do the next year? Carries his defense along with George's to the conferance final on what should have been a lotto team.

3rd pairing guy on the left side, Gil is perfect. Does everything you need of him and does it well.

I have little use for a slow, lumbering D-man like Gill. Never liked him and just because he was on a Cup winning team doesn't change that. I wouldn't cry if we got him - as long as it's for the 3rd pairing, but here's the rub...he's a lefty, so where do you put him?

Plus, Diddle dealing with the Habs, the price is high just for being in the division. Pass.
