Big Ev wrote:"you don't trade picks and prospects" in a rebuild is illogical. You DO if it improves your team for the next 10 years.

That means the Kessel trade was a home run right ? Sarcasm

You don't trade prospects unless they are redundant.

You don't trade draft picks unless you are 110% sure the team will go far and it will be a late 1st round pick (in a weak draft preferably).

Neither of these are true in this case.

Big Ev wrote:For sure I'd do it. Parise is a game-breaker.

Karlsson isn't ?

Not as much as Parise.

Have people lost their minds? Parise is a Top 10 legit NHL who is still not even in his prime. If he's on the Sens, the team isn't a bottom feeder next year.

Sayign you don't trade prospects unless they are redundant is stupid, it really is. You wouldn't trade any prospects for Parise?

Parise is 10x the player Kessel is.

People obviously don't realize how good Parise is. That's a guy who was considered a top 10 player in the league last year and probably still is.

People need to get a grip, I love Karlsson as much as anyone and it would take a very special player to even get someone to consider trading Karlsson... Parise is a franchise, elite, number 1 winger, type of player.

Alfi didn't even play in the league until he was 23, 24 and The Sens got 15 years out of him. Parise is more than Alfi was at his age by a mile.

The only people who would make that deal are die hards that have a love fest that can only be considered unhealthy for their players.

It's not about underestimating Parise, we need a lot more than him to get out of bottom feeder status.

No #2C, young inexperienced D, little depth in scoring.

Ironically, goaltending is the closest to a sure bet for the Sens.

I'm a big believer that this team just need to build, grow up and mature together and win with as much talent on cheap ELC/RFA contracts.

If we were in a position like SJ or the Caps then I'd do it.

In my opinion the trade makes no sense for the Sens at this time.

No, no you don't. That's the point.

The only people on the planet, maybe even beyond that, that wouldn't trade Karlsson for Parise are either A) people that bought a Karlsson jersey and would feel like they wasted money... or B) the worlds biggest homers.

It's basically like saying would you trade Karlsson for Crosby, it's a little extreme but not by much.

See I'd do that. But I wouldn't for Parise. You seem to be describing him as the 2nd coming of jesus. He's not. He's amazing and is MVP calibre. If the deal was karlsson straight up for Parise, it wouldn't work. I'd like to still keep the mentality of building from the back out. Trade the redundant ones I guess.

Btw, I'm saying in a realistic scenario a karlsson for parise deal is intriguing and I would consider it. But NJ would never do that, so we're talking karlsson ++ and that's what I have beef with.

Besides, if parise is here I'd want karlsson feeding him some pucks. Who would you prefer? Ben Blood? Carkner?

Well that's where we disagree.

So if we land Parise who's gonna be our #1 PMD ? You're taking a risk on Rundblad, whereas EK has had 2 years to adjust to the NHL and still hasn't hit his peak.

We have no #2C, it will take years for Zibby to grow into the role and a couple of years for our future defence pairings to mature.

We might make the playoffs over the next couple years and get blown out in the 1st round, yay.

Meanwhile EK will be putting up 50+ pts a season with Larsson in NJ and they'll be a constant playoff threat in the East for years to come.

Makes no sense to me. Not the trade per se but the situation the Sens are in now.

This team is no position to trade picks and prospects to "accelerate the rebuild". We might as well hire Jurke.

Once we know what we have in terms of NHL readiness we can make some clever trades or FA signings to fill holes.

It's pretty easy to trade for PMD's these days...moreso than a #1 C/W.

Is it though? You might be right, but when was the last time an ELITE puck moving D-man was traded? Kaberle I guess, but I'd rather have Karlsson by a mile. Burns? Arguable, but again, as far as offense, I'd rather have Karlsson. Campbell, but his numbers dipped for one reason or another. Visnovsky is one that comes to mind. A terrible trade by Edmonton to lose him.

Typically when a team has an elite puck-mover, they keep him.

Like who ? and are they as good as Karlsson ?

Seeing teams trade or throw money at overrated players like Kaberle and Wisniewski makes me think otherwise.

Karlsson will be one the top PMD in the league. I wouldn't trade him for a winger who's only got a couple of really good years left. I don't care how good he is.

Kaberle, Pronger, Brent Burns, Ryan Whitney, Alex Goligoski, Jack Johnson, all come to mind, and that's just the last couple of seasons.

If you have Parise and Rundblad, you don't need another ELITE PMD anyway.

Are you actually serious? Parise is 27. You're acting like he's int he twilight of his career.

Who knows how Rundblad will be in the NHL ? I wouldn't pick him over Karlsson until we know. That's another point I'm trying to make.

Kaberle was a huge overpayment and he's overrated. Pronger was only a big trade, big contract for an older often injured D-man. I wouldn't quite put the others at Karlsson level in terms of offense. He put up 45 pts on a crappy team.

Top players are hard to come by by trade or FA. I'd rather draft and develop the core of this team.

Parise is one year away from UFA status, I'd rather have our top players on RFA right now considering how much money the best ones will command once they reach UFA status.

This is why the Kessel trade is bad(besides the fact Kessel is a one dimensional flake). Burke could have 3 top prospects in their RFA years, whereas Kessel is 3 years from UFA. How much will it cost to keep him and will he even want to stay ? Think the Leafs can be serious contenders before then ?

It's not about his skill level as much as contract status although who knows how we'll be after his knee surgery.

I'm actually glad there's divide, I had the same issues when it got brought up the other day.

I said no. May have more to do with me not being as high on Parise as others, but until David Rundblad proves he can take Karlsson's place I wouldn't move Erik anyways.

I would definitely trade Karlsson straight-up for Parise, or as part of a package (depending on the other pieces). I'm surprised there's much of a debate. I'd rather try to replace a PMD than to try and find a legit 40 to 50 goal scorer.

I'm not sure it makes sense to trade for Parise now, unless his value is diminished due to him not having a contract. A smarter move might be to wait until his one-year deal expires (assuming he only gets a one-year deal from arbitration), and then throw lots of money at him during free agency (or trade a pick for his rights just prior to free agency).
