There will be an O on the front of the jersey.

No decision, however stupid, will surprise me when it comes to this organization's PR, marketing, and design people, but with respect to the rumoured "0" jersey... I'll believe it (and despair) only when I see it.

Look at the teaser they have shown. It's pretty easy to see there will be an O on the front, and that's what the fans want. They are listening to the fans for a change.

It's the blind leading the blind. What they need is a real marketing / design team who knows what they're doing. I.e., professionals who know that big, naked, happy Spartans ranting incoherently for a full 2-3 minutes isn't a really good way to sell a hockey team.

The average, for any team, is generally stupid. Casual hockey fans in general are stupid when it comes to hockey. I trust their opinion on these matters even less than I do their hockey opinions.

So you're saying you're an expert on design and such?

PS That Spartan decision apparenlty came from the top.

I have a few friends who run a design company. All they do is laugh at the ineptness of the Sens marketing and design people -- and these are casual Ottawa Sens fans we're talking about here.

Are they experts because they run a design company?

Ummm... Yes. If design experts are experts at design, I don't know who is. This isn't your mom & pop show I'm talking about here.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away...

It is a period of civil war. Rebel
spaceships, striking from a hidden
base, have won their first victory
against the evil Galactic Empire.

During the battle, Rebel spies managed
to steal secret plans to the Empire's
ultimate weapon, the Death Star, an
armored space station with enough
power to destroy an entire planet.

Pursued by the Empire's sinister agents,
Princess Leia races home aboard her
starship, custodian of the stolen plans
that can save her people and restore
freedom to the galaxy....

Too much going on there for a patch. That centurion head would be the size of a loonie or twoonie on a patch. Otherwise, yea, boring, but whatever. It's the right idea -- use the patches to acknowledge stuff like this -- the 20th anniversary, the pre-modern Sens franchise, etc. But not the front logo.

The whole point of making a new third is to have it be a "heritage" jersey. if you're not going to have the front logo have any ties to your heritage, then it's not really a heritage jersey IMO.

and you pretty much have to have a logo in your patch, it's size shouldn't be an issue. The Sharks are currently using a patch on their arms which has thier logo in between two X's.

1. It is? That comes as news to me -- certainly the SNES logo wasn't very retro. Has someone official said this, or is it just speculation?

2. The point of the patch is that it's supposed to be different from the logo. No need to replicate that same image, but smaller, on an already small image -- it's bad design and overkill. Pick just about any team and you'll see how this is most often the case.

Patches are small and have to be simple to be effective. The "O" is actually a really sharp, effective patch, if you ask me -- largely because it's simple, uncomplicated -- I just hate it as a front logo. The more crap going on on a patch, the less effective it is generally. Same with a logo, actually. The more detailed, the worse they look. It's why that original (modern-day) Sens logo wasn't a very good idea. Look at that thing:

http://www.icejerseys.com/images/jerseys_big/O_Senators_H.gif

From a distance, it looks like something I coughed up. There's nothing instantaneous about the way to engages your eye. The most effective, memorable logos are a lot more simple and so engaging. Look at the longstanding appeal of the Canadiens' or the Leafs' logos. The Flames one is a good one, too.

Not the SNES jersey, THIS one is being made into a retro to coincide with the 20th anniversary.

You're right, the patch will be different from our O logo which will be on our heritage thirds. If you look around the league though, every patch has the team's primary logo for the most part.

As for your last point, that's why the O is such a good logo (for a primary logo not only a patch). Best logo we have. Simple, rustic, yes.

[2] Just the opposite is the case. Teams almost never duplicate the main logo in the patch. The SJ example you mention is largely the exception -- and it's only true of the old jerseys. The ones they're wearing right now have the "SJ" on the shoulder, with a small shark fin in the corner.

I'm not sure I get your point about the original (2D) logo. I love that thing and the only thing stopping me from buying that jersey a while back was that the logo is too small. Spending all that money I want it to have some pop.

Although I love the Habs (not the current edition, but in a nostalgic way) I never was enamored with their logo. Boston, Detroit, Philly -- very nicely done. A lot of people put Chicago up among the top and it's about as un-simple as you can get.

Or did you mean simplicity in the number of colors used? I remember when the Expos were still around people made fun of their tri-colored caps. Boston (gold/black/white), Detroit (red/white), Philly (orange/black/white) are all a single color (plus black and/or white).
