That comment wasn't very well recieved by GMHockey members at the time.
After seeing this nonsensical Kelly trade, does anyone want to convince me that Ottawa is planning on making the playoffs within the next 2 years? After trading Kelly for another faceless player, I may even change my original thought process of 3-5 to around 4-5 years before Ottawa even sniffs playoff hockey again.
I guess we'll see. Obviously a lot of ifs here, but what if Regin shows more of what he had last year -- there's our 2nd line center. And Smith can take over for Kelly. Sure, he's not going to be as smart defensively, but he's got better hands and size. I really liked how Butler has played, and he started scoring recently. Add GL in the draft and you, essentially, replace Fisher, Kelly and Kovalev with Regin, Butler and Landeskog -- in no particular order. Maybe even more, if they can bundle some of those extra picks into another top-five.
I'm not suggesting that lineup (with rookies Cowen and Rundblad) will make the playoffs next year, but are you suggesting that, with two full seasons under their belts (i.e. in the 3rd year of the rebuild) they will not be better than the sorry bunch from last year? When we were the 5th seed in the East?
Don't forget that, with a terrible start by Kuba (actually his "start" was better than when he actually started playing), Gonchar and Phillips plus the terrible goaltending, we were still within reach of 8th before Spezza went down. Replace "terrible goaltending" with a true starter (we have the cap) and I don't see why this lineup with the expected changes does not get to the post-season.
