Phillips at 3x3... that sounds about right and lower than market value. He takes a pay cut and is given more security. He still fills a huge hole that would have otherwise been left if he was traded or didn't resign.

Phillips games hasn't been great this year but it hasn't been as awful as some people suggest. The team has been bad as a whole and absolutely nothing has gone The Sens way this season, Phillips is no different.

Good cap hit and term for a good D man. Doesn't bog down The Sens in any way and probably makes them better long term then a 4th rounder and and some 3rd line plug ever could.

I wouldn't put too much stock in that. My guess remains 3x3.

I'm not sure if you meant to be ironic, but that's precisely the figure that sources are reporting. Sounds about right, too.

prosportsblogging, isn't that Kevin Lee's site? Wouldn't put too much stock into it. Looks at this other recent post by the same author. So full of fail.

I don't put much stock into anything that doesn't show up on TSN, to be honest. I was just pointing out that there were reports floating around there with the same number and term that spader was guessing at.

How is $3million lower than market value? I find it kind of odd that a guy who is apparently worth over $3M on the free agent market isn't worth more than a 2nd round pick in a trade? (This is speculation on the possibility he might not be traded).

People blame Phillips because they don't want to blame golden boy Karlsson.

I love was EK brings and know full well that he has the potential to be a fantastic player, but (putting it politely) he's pretty raw on the defensive side at the moment. People point to Phillips and say, "ah, -27, disaster, he's done, trade him!", but he spent most of the season, from mid-November until early February, paired with a very defensively underwhelming Karlsson (now a -30; -24 since the new year). Phillips already looks infinitely better paired with Brian Lee, of all people, and while EK's +/- continues to plummet, Phillips's is staying about even.

The Phillips hate / disrespect is tied directly into an inability to admit that EK is not yet a steady presence in his own end. These are the growing pains that a young D has to go through, tho', and you definitely need guys like Phillips to help that transition along (or to blame, if you're impatient about this whole rebuilding thing and don't want to blame the golden boy kids).

3 by 3 is horrible. Only bonus would be if he doesn't have a NTC. This is the guy with the worst +- in the league. Getting older. Didnt allow the sens to get assets for working somewhere else for a few months

Karlsson has an even worse +/-, and was arguably just as much at fault (if not more) for the awful +/- numbers that he and Phillips put up together when they were a pair. Do we trade him? No, right?

Why do we blame first and foremost the guy with all the experience and a history of doing the contrary, and not have the young, raw, inexperienced guy who was his partner share in any of that blame? Phillips's play this year, which admittedly has not been great (but definitely much improved since being paired with Lee) has a lot to do with his partner's. And of course a young D is going to be accident prone. There's only so much Phillips can do to prevent that.

Pair any D in the league with Karlsson, for this year, with this exact team, and I'm sure they'll look pretty awful, too. Lidstrom, Weber, Chara, whoever -- they'd all be minus players this year if they played with this OTT team, paired with Karlsson.

These are the growing pains of a rebuild -- the rebuild most people here said they had the patience and hockey sense to live through. We're not 2 months into this rebuild, however, before we're ready to throw a guy like Phillips under the bus because he couldn't play D for his partner and himself at the same time. Awful.

We blame Phillips because he has 0 offensive upside. You can't compare him to karlsson. Well I guess you can...

100% fact Smile

Sounds like it'll be a limited NTC for years 2 and 3. It's a good deal because Phillips is now worth more as an asset than he was when he was a UFA IMO. Not only that, but he's had the year from hell, let him come back next year and start from a clean slate with the new coaching staff. I think we can give him the benefit of the doubt and be pleased that he wants to stay around for a rebuild, no?

The thing is, you're getting one of the most explosive young talents in the league next year in Rundblad - which will be a TON of fun for us to watch. But..he's not what you'd call a defensive powerhouse. Combine that with Karlsson and Gonchar - and you desperately need some quality stay at home guys, which Phillip is, there can be no denying that. You could rely on Cowen and Carkner all year, but I advise against it 100%.

If he *was* signed for $3M x 3 then I'm sure we would be able to get more than a 2nd rounder for him. Fact is he's UFA in July and that's why the trade return would necessarily be lower.

Yeah, the only issue would be if he continues to suck, but that's a risk I think that needs to be taken with a guy like Phillips.

Anytime someone uses the +/- stat to prove or disprove a point they are trying to make, I stop listening. Why? It's the dumbest way to actually use a number to show how well or poor a player is playing.

Go jump on the Tom Priesing bandwagon. He's doing great in, ummmm.... where is he?

But, to be fair, Phillips has had a horrible season, and much of that had nothing to do with Karlsson. There was a long, long stretch in there where it seemed that every game he would make a really bone-headed play (passing up the middle) or losing battles against players he should have just brushed off like a fly. The +/- is a result of his bad play, there is no denying it, even if Karlsson had a hand in helping.
