Were the Senators asking too much for Phillips. In some circles, it's believed they did. The Habs pretty well got Sopel for a fourth rounder

I'd say that's true.

Or the Senators were asking for fair value for Phillips and The Ghost was too goddamn cheap?

I think a 2nd contract with a lower hit is gonna be important to gauge where this guy is at in the coming years.

EDIT: Beaten to the puch, haha.

He'll be putting up some hefty point totals IMO, but I'm not saying he's anywhere near Keith's overall abilities, I'm saying that Keith's contract will be the ceiling for all young, successful D-men - and the contract structure, length and dollars will be very similar for the game's next wave of D-men studs. It's a long length, granted, but it only takes these guys into their low 30s, the money is manageable. It's all about the 10 year/50-55 million IMO, instead of having a war when he turns UFA and finding yourself having to let one go, a la Chara.

This has a ton of variables obviously, but if Karlsson continues to develop, I bet he gets a 10 year, 55 million - or in that ballpark.

Agreed. We're far from considering a 10 year commitment. We have no idea where he'll be in a couple of years. I'm not too sure how the RFA/UFA thing works, but as long as he's RFA at the end of the term of his 2nd contract and he signs for something similar to EJ's 2nd, I'm happy.

Yeah, that's probably more like it actually. Leak 2 cheap-ish years out of him, then go for it if he's still developing.

I don't want any player signed for that long, especially one who is -28 on the season

It's impossible to even argue about Karlsson contract right now anyway - too many variables. Let me rephrase by saying: if he continues to develop + put up the points we know he can, he'll fit into the mold of a young guy who'll get the long term, big money contract.

in my opinion, anything over 5 years is a bad idea

So hard to do that in this cap era though if it's a young player. You want to keep it at a manageable cap hit, so 5.5 or under fits that. If the same player gets to UFA at age 28, you're paying well over 5.5 for him. That's part of the plan with Keith, Toews and Kane IMO, they will always be there, you'll always be able to build around them. The same needs to be done with us in a few years, hopefully with Karlsson, Cowen etc.

Again, we can talk about this when Karlsson is 25+. No sense in debating something this hypothetical. 10,000 things could happen in the interval.

Keith didn't get that contract until his 3rd contract.

It's posted on HFboards but according to some European (non-english) sites Roman Wick is getting called up tonight.

Google translation:
Roman Wick appointed to the NHL
Roman Wick has fulfilled his NHL dream for now: In the night to morning, he will deny all likelihood, his first game in the biggest league in the world. He was appointed by the Ottawa Senators after the recent strong performance in the farm team to the Binghamton Senators NHL team.

I love those google translations Smile

It was a matter of time before Wick got the call. His game has improved 10 fold compared to camp down in Bingo and this is a shot he absolutely deserves. This move also might keep him in the organization another year or two. Next year, like everyone else in the organization, he will have a legit shot at cracking the lineup with a good camp.

A guy like Regin could be in deep if he doesn't blow people out of the water next year at camp. Having a one way deal he may indeed be a candidate to be waived with a bad camp next year.

OT: Regin is so dirty in NHL 11. His size and speed and skill is unreal. haha

Wick is an RFA after this year, I couldn't imagine Ottawa not giving him a shot in the NHL and see where he is at, considering where his game is now.

First half of the year I didn't think he was worth calling up.

He's not ready IMO. He only started to play better when he was paired with O'Brien and Condra, but he's still not strong enough. We'll see how he does, I wish him well, but this is a one or two game trial at the most (IMO).
