Clouston on the Svatos pickup:

I love this "free look" thing we have going. Elliott for Anderson and Svatos off waivers. Cost us nothing and we have a chance to improve the team. Hopefully both of them impress (as Anderson has so far) and we can get them signed to reasonable contracts.

Svatos hasn't impressed in a long time I am not counting on that.

That's the thing! It's a free opportunity. He doesn't have to impress. I just like that we're able to pick these guys up to take a look. He very well may be terrible. Who knows. He only put up 3 pts in 9 GP in Nashville, but maybe he's able to do more here. Maybe not. It doesn't matter. The point is that we're in a position to audition 2 guys for the rest of the season, plus all the call-ups. Exciting times.

I'd sign him for $3 million for 4 years.
Never go 4 years on the 2nd contract. Leaves the player a UFA at the end. IMO 2nd contracts should be 2-3 years or longterm for franchise type players.

Lots of cap space coming, too, I bet. Smile

We've got $37M locked up next year for 14 players. I don't know how the B-town players that will move up to the NHL factor into those numbers though. What I do know is that Murray has some work to do regarding the RFAs and UFAs this summer. Butler, Greening, Condra, Svatos, Shannon, Smith, Lessard, Phillips, Campoli, Anderson, Wick, Hale, Brodeur, Kinrade, Benoit, Derek Smith, Daugavins, Keller, Bailey, Bass are all FAs of one kind or another. I left Glasscal off the list for obvious reasons, but that's like 20 players that he has to deal with. Some will walk for sure (Bailey comes to mind), but many of those players will need a new contract. I don't envy the workload that BM (or his replacement) has this summer.
The vast majority of the players listed will get the minimum raise or walk to another organization. His only challenges should be Phillips, Anderson and maybe Campoli if he isn't moved.

That's true. Most of those examples are probably easily dealt with. Butler, Greening, and any others that are projecting to play with the big club next year will likely take some of BM's attention as he'll probably want to get the most out of those signings.

Or 10 years, 55 million?

Svatos also played with Craig Anderson last year - Anderson's near Vezina nominee season - so for sure Bryan Murray talked to Anderson about his work ethic etc.

You have to forward think the Erik Karlsson contract, pay extra for RFA years, reap the benefits when he's 27,28,29,30,31,32. One could argue that's he'll be worth 5.5 in his 2nd contract anyway. What's missing is for the Sens to take advantage of one, short contract in there, like a 2 year, 3.2 per year contract, then move to the 10 year, 55 million. But in that instance you're coming off a 3.2 million dollar salary for Karlsson, so it's not as easy to get that kind of 10 year cap hit IMO. Although, I suppose Keith will be Karlsson's comparative assuming the cap stays steady after this year, so that's favourable to us, perhaps we can get that 2nd contract in after all.

No way his agent accepts a long term deal unless its a huge overpayment, like a diPietro contact.

He'll take a 2-3 year deal and see if he can raise his value even more, he already has an all-star appearance and leads the team in scoring.

I wouldn't give him a huge contact until he earns it anyway, don't want to Alex Daigle the kids.

Again, Keith is his comparable - and Keith was coming off the best season a guy can have pretty much.

Whoa, slow down. Keith isn't Karlsson's comparable, not at this stage. Not even close. Right now, Karlsson hasn't done a lot. He's a kid, and he has the potential to be great, but he's in his infancy, basically. Let's hold up on this for a while. Erik Johnson signed a 2 year / 5 mil deal after his ELC expired. That's more of a comparable for EK right now, looking to 2012.

Keith is not comparable at all, because Keith is a heck of a lot better than Karlsson is (or at least was that season).

I think a 2nd contract with a lower hit is gonna be important to gauge where this guy is at in the coming years.

EDIT: Beaten to the puch, haha.

Agreed. We're far from considering a 10 year commitment. We have no idea where he'll be in a couple of years. I'm not too sure how the RFA/UFA thing works, but as long as he's RFA at the end of the term of his 2nd contract and he signs for something similar to EJ's 2nd, I'm happy.

Were the Senators asking too much for Phillips. In some circles, it's believed they did. The Habs pretty well got Sopel for a fourth rounder

I'd say that's true.

Or the Senators were asking for fair value for Phillips and The Ghost was too goddamn cheap?

He'll be putting up some hefty point totals IMO, but I'm not saying he's anywhere near Keith's overall abilities, I'm saying that Keith's contract will be the ceiling for all young, successful D-men - and the contract structure, length and dollars will be very similar for the game's next wave of D-men studs. It's a long length, granted, but it only takes these guys into their low 30s, the money is manageable. It's all about the 10 year/50-55 million IMO, instead of having a war when he turns UFA and finding yourself having to let one go, a la Chara.

This has a ton of variables obviously, but if Karlsson continues to develop, I bet he gets a 10 year, 55 million - or in that ballpark.
