Murray’s been pretty good, I can’t lie. When he’s made “bad” trades, they seemed decent at the time (with the exception of Heatley, but his hands were tied). The Stillman/Commodore experiment seemed reasonable at the time, Matt Cullen was a good pickup, etc. His signings haven’t been all that bad either. The Heatley and Spezza deals were considered decent at the time…. His big misses have been Kovalev (that was Melnyk, me thinks) and Gonchar. Even the Gonchar signing was considered decent at the time.

His drafting and college signings have been good.

Anyway, I don’t really want to rehash his history with the Sens, but I appreciate what he’s tried to do here. I still think he won’t be back next year, but it wouldn’t be a bad thing if he is.

The problem is how many decent, at the time trades, and signings that go wrong does a GM get before he's moved? The hindsight is 20/20 argument is part of life as a GM. We praise him for things that have gone well and say well at the time they were good so just because things went bad it doesn't really matter. I personally love what Murray has done this season under the circumstances and I love how he's drafted and what he's done with the college route but I'm not giving him a complete mulligan just because the trades looked good at the time and now are turning out to be horrible.

I think it's time to move on with a new GM but keep Murray on as a consultant.

If Bryan Murray is indeed a lame-duck GM for the Ottawa Senators, he isn’t giving that impression to new goalie Craig Anderson’s agent.

“I get a 100 per cent feeling that Bryan is completely in charge,” said Justin Duberman, who spoke briefly with Murray yesterday regarding an extension for the Senators’ newest acquisition.

If there was any doubt that Murray is going to be part of the Senators brain trust going forward, it has been extinguished in the days leading up to the NHL’s trade deadline. Perhaps Murray won’t be holding down the GM title — TV analyst Pierre McGuire and Tampa Bay Lightning assistant GM Julien BriseBois have emerged as the early contenders for the job — but there’s little doubt he’ll continue to have a say in the team’s decision-making after this season.

Brisebois is intruguing but McGuire Facepalm

Getting rid of Murray for McGuire is not the right direction. I want to see less of McGuire and his turtle head

It sounds like Murray will be staying in some capacity which I like. As for the new GM being McGuire that is a touchy subject around here and I'm not even gonna go there.

I’m all for McQuire, but I don’t want to rehash that debate. I said all along that Murray will stay with the organization in another role, and we’ll have a new GM by the draft. I’m so smart. Oh wait…it hasn’t happened yet.

A month or so ago, I would’ve thought it insane to have Murray back as GM, but for some reason, now I’m thinking it wouldn’t be such a bad thing.

It's funny, I'm thinking the opposite now -- that is, I thought he was gone for sure, but now I'm not so sure. Guy is a hard read, with a serious poker face. I'm just not sure an owner lets a GM do what he's doing right now if he doesn't trust him. Guess we'll find out in the next 4 months.

I'm dead serious when I say that I'm comfortable if they allow Murray and his group to do the draft, with the new GM taking over for the FA period. Let's be honest, even if they fire Murray at the end of the year, the entire staff doesn't go, they can't, and the new GM that comes in unless he has a staff that has been watching the Junior players for a year now can't do the draft.

I'm fine though if he stays, and I'm also ok if he does the draft and then moves on, but if you going to get rid of Bryan, then I think Tim has to go too, at least you can't consider him for GM...they are 2 heads of the same snake so to speak. Same ideals and philosophy of building a team.

Just to clarify, Murray will not be fired. His contract is up at the end of the season (not sure of the exact date).

He is if he's asked to leave before his contract end date...

I know it's splitting hairs, but...

Still, I understand your point and I did use the wrong terms.

If Murray stays as GM I pray that he replaces the pro scouting department and gets a capologist as A/GM.

Murray will be in Ottawa until the RIGHT GM found, the way it should be.

GREAT TO BE BACK!

I'm of the same mindset and it wouldn't surprise me to see him get a one year extension. I'm entirely comfortable with that scenario. It will allow more time to find a willing and able replacement and we'll be that much further into the rebuilding process. When the new GM takes over he should have a decent cupboard of talent to work with.
