Much as I like the guy (and wear his jersey), I think you're right. This move begins the process of making the Sens a better team.

Things never would've changed had Murray not made this move.

As stunned as I was (yes I was) because of the fan love for him and the fact that his smile alone puts butts in the seats, this was absolutely 100% the right thing to do to move on to bigger and better things with the franchise.

Good on Murray for doing it, I'm sure it wasn't that easy.

Does Murray get to stick around after this? This was a huge move on his part, and one that needed to be made. Has he bought himself another year as GM?

He's a good guy, no question. This move just opens doors for players that were lower in the pecking order and really had no hope of moving up the ladder and an off year was the perfect opportunity.

Heck, even Jim O'Brien's light at the end of the tunnel just got a lot brighter today.

Smith and Winchester also move up a bit methinks. There's no question in my mind that this was the right move. Tough, but the right thing to do.

For sure. I think we'll tread water for the rest of the season with those guys and start to surround and support what we have left of the current lineup with more permanent solutions. Should be a good All-Star year for the Senators.

We have to see what he does with Phillips first, but now I wouldn't be surprised.

He deserves a lifetime contract and part-ownership for this deal.

This trade is a big feather in his "I want to stay for the process" cap. I agree though, what he does up until the deadline will go a long way towards pleading his case. This was a solid, important trade, but he has a lot of work yet to do.

I think it was originally a suggestion by 6th Sens... Chrip has now morphed this into a rumour?

Facepalm

There's more to it than just that though. There were a couple of guys I was chatting with that seemed to have a little better connections than just the common fan - and they were saying that they heard it was TO's pick to Ottawa for Phillips - which none of us understood.

So you start putting 2 and 2 together + Chirp was saying he'd heard some rumblings and he was 100% the guy who broke this trade (and others).

100% the guy who broke the trade along with some others? Sarcasm
Chirp did post that something between Ott and Nashville was happening just before 11am... so credit there.

But really, what good is a "rumour" an hour before it's public?

The people calling into Team 1200 are pissed about this move, saying Murray Cussed it up etc...

You can't please anyone...

I understand that it's tough to post specifics and possibly risk being cut off or whatever but he could have gotten away with "I can confirm that a forward will be traded for a 1st round pick today" and gotten full credit once the deal went through.

I thinK Murray needs to stay in some form of advisory role. People can run him through the grinders all they want, but Heatley really screwed him over when it comes down to it. If it weren't for Heater's Richard move, we wouldn't have gotten Kovalev, we likely wouldn't have nagged Gonchar to solve our PP problems, and we likely wouldn't have had to go through numerous coaches.

Leclaire was a gamble, but his stats when healthy didn't lie. Tough to predict what happened this year on that front.

His drafting experience is where he is most powerful- and that's why I see him staying on as either a Head of Scouting or special advisory role to the GM.

Have somebody new take the reigns and organize the current team- and have Murray look after the future and youth.

McKenzie's verdict: Good for Nashville, Ottawa got too little. Laugh1

Only surprise is I thought OTT would get 1st-rounder and good prospect maybe closer to playing, but getting 2 picks emphasizes total rebuild

Great move for Nashville. Good player, cost certainty for 2 years, current roster unaffected, fills a huge need. All good for the Preds.

I didn't really think of this, but Neil must be absolutely heartbroken right now. Apparently he looked the most shaken up of everyone.

I think it's a great move for both sides. Cap savings are tremendous, we just dropped ANOTHER 4.2 mil for nothing. Add that to Leclaire, Ruutu, Shannon, Phillips and Kovalev who will be gone, that'll be $18.5 million dropped this year.

Incredible.

Not to mention two first round picks! Rebuild is in full swing, no doubt.

Noooooooooooooo

Sad to see but it had to be done.

Question is how does the team respond to this? It looks like they are in shock right now.

Sens gave up a good player.. BUT if this is a re-build then they had to do it.
