Since when is Gonchar worth a ton? Kaberle has more value than him right now and he's a UFA after this year.
Since GMs started looking at the big picture instead of one poorly coached, poorly managed year in Ottawa. Gonchar would be
huge for a team lacking punch on the backend, for a team like SJ for example, they'd have Boyle, Gonchar, Vlasic and Demers rounding out their top 4, much better than throwing Wallin or Huskins in there and hoping they can float.
The Sharks have been hurting all year, if they give Boyle a hand by bringing in a game-changer like Gonchar, it has a ripple effect through the whole team. Boyle can play a little less, be a little fresher, the pressure gets taken off him slightly, the forwards get pucks quicker with 2 all-world puck-movers getting them the pucks, a Boyle/Gonchar pairing on the PP would be lethal, the forwards would score more, the team's confidence goes up, everything.
Just because we're a black hole of talent in Ottawa, certainly doesn't mean that magically our players have no value. The Sharks apparently wanted Gonchar in the summer but were beaten out by us, so now, if you want him, you pay. Same applies for any team that wants him.
