About Campoli though, he might still be a useful player here, but he might be an even more useful player to someone else gunning for a cup. If Vancouver's looking to replace Edler, then Campoli is the closest replacement we have available.

Rundblad is a suitable replacement for Campoli.

i don't think we're getting rid of gonchar and i'm not sure i want to either. i'd like him to get another year to strut his stuff. just needs a better defensive partner.

Campoli is the odd man out IMO. If there's an offer out there for a 2nd rounder, then I'd take it and let Rundblad take his spot.

Unless of course, you can get rid of Kuba...that would be optimum.

Why is Kovalev so far down? Tell me we're gonna get rid of him by the deadline, that would be Cussing useless if we didn't even get a 3rd or 4th round pick for the bum.

yeah but if it all depends on who's around. i wouldn't get rid of all of phillips, gonchar and campoli. we need some guys to stick around. Campoli could be a guy to keep around especially if rundblad can't make the jump.

Somebody might take Kovalev. I keep hearing how he is supposed to be very clutch in the playoffs - obviously Ottawa never got to see that first hand, which doesn't help his value.

I think he'd likely be one of the least preferred veteran wingers available, probably the desperation pick up.

I'd keep Campoli only because he's young and an RFA coming off an offensively challenged season so he'll be cheap. The guy was supposed to be far better offensively than he has been though so I wouldn't say he's always improving.

I don't think he meant improving offensively.

Maybe not but when you're cast in the roll of offensive D man and you don't produce I don't think you qualify as always improving.

Take it for what its worth butNHLSources tweeted that the SJS are interested in Gonchar. Apperently they were close to grabbing him in july...

Wow, that'd be great if we could unload his salary over the next couple years. SJ is right up against the cap for this year though, so there would have to be a lot of salary coming back.

SJ has a bunch of cap space for the next couple of years, but they also need to sign MANY players to fill-in their roster. We’d need to take significant salary back from SJ, and the only guys they have signed long-term are Thornton, Marleau, Pavelski, Clowe, and Heatley. Dan Boyle is on that list too, but he’s gotta be untouchable.

Anyway, I have a tough time imagining SJ would want Gonchar’s cap hit over the next couple of years with all the signing they’ll have to do. Just don’t see it happening.

Also, take this with a major grain of salt, but SJ has intense interest in Phillips according to some nerd who says he has 'inside information' ( Laugh1 ) - and their willing to part with McGinn and a 2nd.

Now, if this is true about Gonchar, that may be a legitimate offer for Gonch. Although, it'd be McGinn + a 1st IMO (yes, Gonchar is worth a ton).

But he's been improving as a defenseman. I picked the guy in the draft pool so I'ma s aware as anyone about his lack of productivity, but with Gonchar and Karlsson and, to a lesser extent, Kuba, Campoli is not really out there in an offensive role.

I doubt we get that much. A 1st is all we could dream of for those guys. But dream we can do... Anyways it's supppsed to be our turn to fleece SJ

If SJS are offering McGinn and a 2nd, Murray would have taken it already.

It might be being offered, but SJ can't do it yet, they need to clear salary first. To which, I would say toss in Huskins as a dump and we'll shelter that contract until the summer.

Since when is Gonchar worth a ton? Kaberle has more value than him right now and he's a UFA after this year.

Since GMs started looking at the big picture instead of one poorly coached, poorly managed year in Ottawa. Gonchar would be huge for a team lacking punch on the backend, for a team like SJ for example, they'd have Boyle, Gonchar, Vlasic and Demers rounding out their top 4, much better than throwing Wallin or Huskins in there and hoping they can float.

The Sharks have been hurting all year, if they give Boyle a hand by bringing in a game-changer like Gonchar, it has a ripple effect through the whole team. Boyle can play a little less, be a little fresher, the pressure gets taken off him slightly, the forwards get pucks quicker with 2 all-world puck-movers getting them the pucks, a Boyle/Gonchar pairing on the PP would be lethal, the forwards would score more, the team's confidence goes up, everything.

Just because we're a black hole of talent in Ottawa, certainly doesn't mean that magically our players have no value. The Sharks apparently wanted Gonchar in the summer but were beaten out by us, so now, if you want him, you pay. Same applies for any team that wants him.
