Yeah, you could ice an all RFA team and it would be pretty competitive.

I think Calgary is still counting Kotalik against the cap, so they'll be fine once he's waived

Once again, waiving a guy doesn't take him off the team's cap. If he's not bought out or demoted to a minor-league affiliate, his cap hit counts. Waiving a guy means nothing if there's no subsequent action.

regarding this, I doubt anyone picks up Kotalik, so I think its safe to assume if need be, he'll be playing in the 'A' next season or Europe. or the outside chance, someone takes him for half his contract. Point is his entire salary will not be there for the flames next season.

Point is, something's gotta be done with him. Eating $3 mil to have him play in the minors is a tough pill to swallow, and getting a KHL to take him and his contract is harder than it sounds. Lots of teams talk about burying 1-way deals, but few actually do it; and as for shipping a guy to the KHL, WAS fought for months to work something out between the KHL and Nylander, and CHI tried (and failed) to do the same with Khabibulin.

Anyway, as of right now, Kotalik is a Flame and his salary remains on the books. CGY has a lot of options (including re-entry waivers and buyout), but they haven't done anything yet. And until they do, we can't really know their real cap situation.

NHLSourcesSay tweets that Hawks aim to sign and trade Niemi; Turco to Hawks is close to done.

Apparently the Hawks have walked away from Niemi and have signed Turco (per HockeyBuzz).

Dumb, dumb, dumb.

It's because they couldn't walk-away from the ruling.
