To best utilize Wick or Butler, they really need a chance in the top 6. Does that mean that potentially Regin plays 3rd line C and on the PP with Spez and Alfie?

I'm trying to wrap my head around this, but for sure I feel that Wick and Butler will compete almost to the last day. If they go down to Bingo, they'll be up sooner rather than later.

Exactly. Kovalev will be gone after this season, and that's a winger spot tailor made for either wick or Butler. Ruutu as well. They may deserve to be on the team by the time training camp is said and done, but I just don't see where the space will come from.

Regin, Alfie, Michalek, Kovalev, and Foligno are our wingers slated to be in the top 2 lines. I don't know how rehab's going for both Michalek and Kovalev, but that might be the only way one of these guys starts the season with the big club. Sucks, but it is a numbers game.

Z.Smith is where the space comes from for one of Wick or Butler unfortunately. Z.Smith would be the first call up, the loser of the Butler/Wick, the 2nd forward call up probably. I dunno, there's NO room for Shannon on this team. That's what I keep saying - and I'm a pretty big fan of his. There's no chance he can play for us.

It would be a damn shame if that happened to Smith. He's earned that spot, but it did happen before with Cody Bass....

I like Smith alot, but saying he has earned the spot is a little over the top. What he has earned is the right to compete for a spot and to be judged based on his performance as opposed to his salary.

say its his spot to lose then. There's a spot available on the 4th line, and I don't see the point in putting Butler or Wick in that spot. Just like it was Cody Bass' and Brian Lee's spots to lose the season after getting swept. Competition will be tough this time around, so I expect Smith to lock that position down in training camp, and if the development camp is any indicator, he's not taking anything for granted.

Of course, anything is possible, but I really expect Shannon to be kept as the 13th forward, and Z. Smith as a regular on the 4th line (and PK)

Excellent question. Back when it happened I remember hearing Kovalev would be out 3-4 months. I thought it could be longer, but that's what was said. Depending on how soon he had the surgery he could be back on the stationary bike by now, and on skates before training camp. Michalek may be even sooner.

I think Kovalev will have a harder time coming back from this than Michalek will. I don't want to make any assumptions until I hear anything concrete from the organization though.

Atleast if he gets on the bikes, Kovalev can still do interviews Ottawa Senators 10/11 projected lineup - Page 4 159628

I stand by my original lineup. Lee and Shannon don't make the club.

I have no idea what happens to them but I don't see them on the NHL roster.

Do I really think that trade will happen? No.

Is there any reason it can't happen? No.

If I was Bryan Murray, I would make the call.

No one can predict a trade. But my thought process in making the deal I did is actually quite simple. Chicago needs roster players. They need NHL forwards badly and they have a need for a couple more defenseman. They need all this and they can't afford anymore than million dollar players. I/Ottawa gave them 3 NHL players and only raised their cap hit by 1 million (assuming Foligno gets around 2 mil per). Therefore they gained 2 bodies with a cap hit of .5 million each which is exactly what they are looking for.

Why did you ask the question? Do you see something wrong with the deal? I did this scenario for fun, but that is what I would do if I was Bryan Murray and it was take your kid to work day in the Nation's Capital.

Total roster: 22, one shy of the limit of 23.

Call-ups on offense: Butler, Wick, Locke
Call-ups on defense: Weircioch, Gryba, D. Smith

In conclusion, I really see no trade in the works. Cowen hopefully can make a charge and force Murray's hand in a trade (same with butler and/or wick) but in all likelihood this will be the lineup on opening day.

And after all that, I just realized I left someone off the roster that will be there. A guy I have been waiting to see if he can carry his strong play over from the end of last year. Chris Campoli. He would put my scenario over the cap and is the main reason I don't like doing things like this. It was fun while it lasted though.

Quite the cluster Cuss in Chicago payroll there Ottawa Senators 10/11 projected lineup - Page 4 270956

it'd be sweet if we could reel in Patrick Sharp, but alas it won't happen. I think they want to keep Sharp at all cost, and get rid of somehow Brian Campbell.

You sacrifice Campoli to have Sharp in the lineup. Your deal is good, if Chicago would take it, I'm sure Murray would too. I worry about letting Kelly go, but with Sharp coming back, I would worry a lot less.

I can't see Sharp staying and I can't see someone taking that Campbell contract. Something has to give.

I also maintain that Chicago likes their Top 4 D. Would they like Campbell's salary to be lower, yep, but they still like him back there.
