Over the last couple of weeks I've seen many Bell trucks around Morgan's Grant. Made me think FibeTV is finally coming. Talked to a guy at a Bell store last weekend, he seemed to know a bit more than the average guy. He said that if the trucks were rolling it's very likely that Fibe is being deployed, and that FibeTV would then be available in a couple of months.

Yesterday in the mail I got a promo pamphlet from Bell. Got excited thinking they may actually be announcing FibeTV and giving dates. Instead, it was a promo for Bell Satellite TV.

Now I'm confused. Would they still be trying to sign people up to buy a dish and pay the installation fee, if FibeTV is coming in a couple of months?

When I put my address on Bell's site, it says Fibe is available.

But you're not in Morgan's Grant. I used to check it periodically, and at one point it said "This year", then a few months later it said "Within six months" -- both converged on December if this year.

However I just checked again now, and they simply state that Fibe is not available but satellite is. I think they may have hit a snag in their deployment plans.

Maybe the truck rolls last weekend or so was techs looking at issues and not actually installing anything.

I guess it's only Fiber to the Node(FTTN)? They're not hooking up Fiber to the household, it's just DSL at that point? That's be nice if that were the case.

Fibe TV is available in my area and Bell is mailing all sorts of spam about it.

I've been looking into it and not sure if it's worth it, doesn't seem I will save much over Rogers and they force me to take their home phone or mobile. I don't need a mobile account and their home phone price and features suck compared to Vonage.

Also sucks that while watching TV doesn't use up your internet bandwidth the FB, twitter etc. apps on the TV do.

And do I really want watching TV using up my internet bandwidth?

Yes, FTTH is only for new houses. We've been in ours for 6 years. But it's not ADSL, or at least not in the way you may remember it. Over short distances you can get pretty high speeds over twisted pair; even more if you bond two lines (every new house is pre-wired for two lines).

Anyhow, drove past one of their trucks today so I rolled down the window and asked a few questions. Yes, they are there for FibeTV. Fibe Internet should already be available (I was at Flamborough/Halton, and I'm over by the Jack Donohue school, so quite a bit of a distance). FibeTV will be anothe rmonth or so.

Anyhow, you should really read up on this. They *guarantee* the internet rates. The lowest offering for Fibe is 15/10, which means 15 Mbps down and up to 10 up. They have filters in place to guarantee that TV and internet don't compete for the same resources.

You must get FibeInternet if you want FibeTV. There is no stipulation for getting home phone. However if you want unlimited usage for $10/month you must have all three services; otherwise it's $30.

You will save a little over Rogers for the same levels of service. You can always negotiate to save even more. Where you come out ahead is if you have more than 1 TV. With Bell you'll get the PVR free ($24.95/month with Rogers) and the second HD box is $7 ($13 with Rogers). The Bell PVR is a lot nicer than the Rogers one (although Rogers is already talking about the NextBox 3, so looks like they are addressing the gap).

The user interface is much nicer on Bell's boxes. You can record 4 shows simultaneously (although you may be limited to 3 HD and 1 SD). You have the whole-home PVR, too.

But the real savings is probably to switch every 2-3 years.

Bought a Smart TV for the bedroom today. Time to cut ties with Satellite and go Internet only. We also have a big Antenna which we need to check out to see if it still works for some free HD.

Now you need Netflix and a US-based DNS service. There are free ones out there.

I got the unlimited with Rogers for an extra $10 a month. My usage was 335 GB last month. It used to be 8-12 GB before Netflix.

You can set up your network connection on your PS3 to use specific primary/secondary DNS servers, too, no? I've got my wireless router set up for the US DNS servers and thinking of changing my LG smart TV to default (0:0:0:0). That way (I think) I can watch US Netflix on the PS3 and everything else, and Canadian on the LGTV. They've got S4 of Community, now.

Unfortunately my router doesn't allow access to making the necessary changes so I have to do it device by device.

What is your access speed and cap? Is it over cable?

BTW I'm getting out of Rogers some time this year or early next. FibeTV is coming and I'd be saving a bundle in the first 6 months, and a little bit after that. And I was pricing that for 3 TVs (I only use 2 now, but I've got my old rear CRT-RPTV in the basement still. I think that's an extra $7 that I may choose not to do (actually, with the whole-home PVR they can watch anything on either TV, plus the girls have Netflix on their tablets and the boys have their iPods, so I don't think I'll need the third TV).

My download speed is up to 7Mbps but that's a limitation that any provider I go with would stick me with due to location.

Also it's over the phone line because cable isn't offered where I live.
