Florida would gladly have taken Leclaire and his 3.8 million salary in exchange for Vokouns 6.3. Why are we trading Kovalev, exactly?

Kovalev out means $5M more cap space, and you think Florida would give up Vokoun for Leclaire? I don't. What is in it for them?

Kovalev is also our second best scorer and has a lot to do with the production Fisher has managed so far. Otherwise, what's in it for Florida is getting a potential successor to the aging Vokoun and saving 2.5 million bucks.

I think, if you do that trade, prerpare to start a new thread about secondary scoring Laugh1

Laugh1 I agree.

You agreed that he would be bashed? If you were agreeing about 7-game series, he beat Washington and Detroit in 7.

This is another example of where Kovalev never gets any respect. Ignore the first month of the season, because he's been great for the rest.

I also don't think it's necessary to acquire a top flight netminder anymore.

ughh, nevermind that he's doing good, he's done plenty(or lack of) now and in his career to put in question his work ethic. hence the lack of respect.

Don't get me wrong, I definately recognize he's been useless for big parts of his career (yet he's about to crack 1,000 pts) but we shouldn't be associating the past with his current play. He's been a little shaky since the break though, let's hope he gets it going tonight.

Yeah right, Vokoun means everything to them right now and is definitely a top 10 goalie talent, they wouldn't take Leclaire on his own, they'd laugh at you.

Oh man, I didn't read that last sentence. Oops. No, I agreed with the prospect that he's not a "great" goalie, however his penchant for winning the big games cannot be questioned.

Without Kovalev we're in 12th place right now trying to figure out how we can make up 5 points and scrape into 8th.

Says the guy with Kovalev-Moonwalking in his avatar:) I was at the game b.t.w.

The biggest issue everyone has with Kovalev is that he *could be* great. He's got elite-level skill and he's getting paid a pretty decent salary for someone in the declining years of his career. Every once in a while he has a great game where he's hustling, fighting for the puck, hitting, but more often than not he coasts, and the points come only because of his high-end talent.

He may be second on the team in scoring, but maybe that's because Fisher and Michalek went cold for two months, and Spezza didn't start playing until January. Prospal is another aging vet, who's got roughly the same number of points (one ahead) while playing 4 fewer games, making $1.15M.

I'm not trying to say Kovalev is a bust, but he could be better; a lot better.

Big Ev wrote:If Murray added Vokoun, all of these goaltending debates would END. He is an ELITE goalie who is keeping Florida respectable. Ellis, Biron, and Theodore are definately not the answer, but Vokoun certainly is.

Murray would be elected mayor if he were to acquire Vokoun.

I don't think those same people would probably run Murray out of town 5 minutes later when they learned the price he paid for him:

Foligno + Cowen/Weircioch + Leclaire/Elliott.

Something like that. All I can say is that, for sure, you're not going to get Vokoun for cheap -- and certainly not by dangling 1) pending UFAs, 2) question mark goalies, and/or 3) 35+ players in the last year of their deal. FLA will demand youth and talent, and probably picks, too.

Me, I want to wait on Elliott. Let's see how he does with his first big test -- the post-season -- before we start crying about "our goaltending sucks!" Elliott has only been in the NHL one calendar year, and look what he's done already. He's looking a lot better than S. Mason and Price right now, that's for sure.

There's a reason why Philly didn't make more of an aggressive move on Vokoun - they weren't prepared to give up the staggering cost.

Elliott with another win, another game where he let in 2 or less, man, wish Ottawa could get some goaltending.

39-22-10 since coming into The NHL... if he was on any other team in the league people in Ottawa and on this board would be begging to trade for him.

People want to talk about a top 10 goaltender, with any kind of playoff run over a round this year, Elliott might be in that group.

Everybody has to start somewhere. I've never been a supporter of the "he hasn't proven anything" theory, for any player, much less one of our own.

Look at Ray Emery, for crying out loud. Brian Elliott has just as good a chance of taking this team deep than Luongo or Fraudeur or Fleury or...
