A real jewel in any Ds crown. I'm sad. Sad

Looking at the deal that went down, I'm not sure we had the assets to make it happen. We don't have a player comparable to Whitney in terms of youth / potential / contract. Kuba was not going to get it done -- maybe if you include our first, but I dunno. That leaves Karlsson. I think we all know what BM's answer would be to that demand.

Whitney is young, but he's more expensive than Kuba and Kuba would have given the Oilers a comparable D-man in terms of vet. experience and stability. Instead of a 6th, we would probably have had to add in Jim O'Brien or Brian Lee and a 3rd or even a 2nd from next year, but that would have been worth it to me.

I'm not really complaining about Kuba, just that Lubo is a dynamite player to me.

That's the magic of prorated salaries, my friend. As each day of the season passes, the real dollars owed to the player shrinks. Given that there's only 1/4th of the season left, we only owe Cullen and Sutton 1/4th of their remaining salaries -- altogether, that might make for an addition of $2 mil in salary. Meanwhile, we probably saved well over $1 mil by subtracting the remaining salaries of Cheechoo and Picard.

According to CapGeek, we actually still have (or had, I guess -- it doesn't mean much now that the deadline has passed) a lot of prorated cap space -- almost $4 mil. Our real cap space figure, however, is really quite small.

I really don't think Kuba is comparable to Whitney -- talent-wise, right now, sure, but not when you factor in things like age and potential. And in any event, Kuba has a NTC, and I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have waived it to go to the restroom of the NHL.

It would have been Karlsson or not at all. Which explains why it didn't happen. Smile

I understand that but before the trades, didn't we have like <1M in prorated cap?

No, we had about $1.5 mil in real cap space. In terms of prorated space, on trade deadline day, we actually had about $6 mil in space (i.e., 1.5 mil x 4). We had the room for a bigger acquisition, in theory anyway.

2 more years of Kuba at 3.7 or 3 more years or Whitney at 4.0? Throw age out the window for a second, Whitney's peaked - and it's come a couple of years ago IMO. I'm not sure if his club foot is really causing him issues, or what it is, but Whitney is a soft, slow player who isn't tough in the least - in fact, he's much softer than Kuba is (and I think they're roughly the same size). He had a nice year a couple of years back where he got 59 points, but from here on out, the Oilers would be lucky to see more than 40 points out of him.

Factor in that we would have included a mid ranged prospect like O'Brien or Lee and a decently high pick and I would have jumped at an Ottawa offer - perhaps I would have even initiated talks with Ottawa.

Kuba's NTC is a big thing obviously, so Ottawa could only have gotten involved on July 1st when it lifts, but...you know, I don't know what to say. The Edmonton Oilers got so amazingly ripped off yesterday that they don't even really realize it yet. Whitney is everything new D-men are taught not to be - and Anaheim turned him into Lubo Visnovsky. Amazing. TRADE DEADLINE BONANZA! - Page 60 489887

I wouldnt trade Kuba for Vivsonvsky anyways, I like Kuba better from a lot of different angles. He's cheaper, has more expierence, has worked well with Karlsson, and is a better all around D man. Vivsonvsky is over rated in a big way. We talk about A Train having a bad Olympics, well, Vivsovsky was maybe the worst D man on that Slovak team.

Ill take Kuba.

Okay then, perhaps my stance is incorrect.

Is this Kuba fella available?

Hope not. Again, Kuba has struggled in big ways at times this year but again, what you saw against The Rangers on Tuesday was a loss because of Kuba being injured. His way more valuable then a lot of people want to give him credit for.

Really? I thought that loss fell on the shoulders of Volchenkoc quite a bit. Then again, he did have to compensate for playing some of Kuba's minutes. Sutton in NY played 20+ minutes a night; I'm feeling quite confident with him right now but we'll have to wait and see what happens tonight I guess.

Oh, A Train was awful but he was taken away from Phillips because of Kuba. Kuba being in the lineup takes a lot of pressure off of A Train and he plays that number 3 role, as a number 1 or 2 guy, he struggles in LARAGE ways.

Kuba plays the most mins on The Sens and has the last 2 years, in every possible scenario. With Sutton coming in his PK time will go down which is a good thing and the risk of injury lessens.

But yes, that was on A Train for a lot of reasons but it all stems back from Kuba leaving.

I wouldn't say that personally, the team was playing like arse from the second the puck was dropped in the 2nd period. And A-Train blew chunks.

Blame it on having 5 D-men (really 4, because one of them was Brian "I suck" Lee.

Ottawa stuggles without Kuba man, look at last year, look at this year, the record shows it. Kuba does a lot of things that go unnoticed because of how simple and unspectacular his game is, he also runs the 1st PP unit and does it fairly well despite how bad it struggles at times.

I would love to know the record without Kuba, I know last year they went 1-8 or something like that without him.

I'm not trying to dump on Kuba, he'll rebound I'm sure, but has anyone else noticed that he gets hurt when someone merely farts in his general direction?

You see the dropoff in his game from when we signed him at this time last year to now though, right?
