Too much money for someone considered a potential liability in his own end...but he's definitely a prime candidate to turn his career around. And if he does, what a steal.

More interesting to me is that Burke (allegedly) spent about eight million bucks to buy a 1st round pick.

It actually wouldn't have made much sense to acquire Phaneuf right now from a Sens standpoint. The Leafs pretty much gave up half their roster for this guy. Why would we do that when we're on such a roll. Not too mention the $$ would be tough to add up, and we're already in a bit of bind going forward with the cap.

Doesn't make any sense to me either. Wouldn't be surprised to see Poni's name a part of that trade too.

This also pretty well confirms that Phaneuf was not pulling his weight and was a bit of a diva in the dressing room. Calgary clearly wanted to get rid of him and Burke took advantage.

I don't see how getting half the roster of the last place team in the league means acquiring meaningful depth. On the cap space front, they've taken back about as much as they've give up... Hagman ($3mil) + Stajan ($1.75) + Mayers ($1.33) + White ($850K) = almost $7 mil, which is about how much Phaneuf and Sjostrom combine for.

Yuck.
