I am consistently wrong on these things though. Another thing to remember, contracts are awarded on offensive statistics and that is one thing in our favour.
Komisarek contract says what? They had pretty much the exact same "offensive stats" last season.

Regehr, Komisarek, Beauchimen -- all comparables with Volchenkov, all defence-first Dmen, all with low offensive stats (i.e., about 20 points on the year), all signed for in between $3.7-$4.2 mil.

Volchenkov at Kuba money would be ideal, honestly. Someone would pay him more than $4 mil on the open market, 100% for sure. What would, for instance, WAS give up for a guy like him? Half the farm, or the whole thing? From Russia with love... TSN spotlight on Volchenkov - Page 3 Icon_smile

We'll take Brooks Laich and Karl Alzner/John Carlson/Oskar Osala.

If we can't come to terms with Volchenkov, that's a team that will pay through the nose for him. He's precisely what they need. Alzner+ would not be unreasonable -- and our future D would get even more insane.

Not for a rental, they wouldn't give Alzner up. Plus, trying to compete with Washington would be very difficult as well.

For a much-improved, very-real shot at a cup? I think they would. There's nothing more right now that that team needs more.

WAS would pay through the nose for Volchenkov, for sure. And any player(s) coming our way would have to be a non-key roster player for this year. Definitely not Laich.

it's hard to pick between Phillips and A-Train, the selfish me wants them both. A-Train definitely needs to be signed and I hope it is nothing too huge in terms of salary. This is the only team he has played for, so am hoping he takes a hometown discount to stay here, he doesn't seem to be the type of player to look for the almighty dollar, he has roots here in Ottawa and I honestly believe he wants to stay here.

I will guarantee he signs for Kuba money, which is fair for both parties. It will be done by February for sure

That is a huge bargain for us, would be really happy with Kuba money for Volchie. Considering what Komisarek got and he is 1/2 or maybe less the d-man A-Train is, Volchie would command huge money on the open market.

Komisarek hit the market as one of the highest profile UFAs and Burke had a hard-on for him. I am sure that Volchie is happy here and will take Kuba $$$. Plus the market is taking a second look at investing big money in defensive defensemen... Look at the success of Toronto with all of their signings, not to mention one of the first that started it off... Jay McKee. Spending big $$$ on these types of players is not a success plan. I love the guy but I think it will be a reasonable deal as both parties have the same goal.

so Toronto's blunder could end up being in our favour, not that I would ever question Volchie going anywhere else. He has never expressed any disgust with the Ottawa management/team, mind you, he really hasn't said much at all, not sure if that is because he is a quiet person or it is because his english is not the best.
