Cam Ward Extension

Holy cow, that is a substantial amount of money. Goodness...I like Cam Ward a lot, I've done a complete 180 from the way I used to feel about him, but he's still on the bubble between great and just quite good. The NTC doesn't matter to me personally, when an organization - and especially a guy like Rutherford - makes a commitment to someone, they fully intent to see it through.

Not to preach, but I'm reading Brodeur's book right now (5.99 at Chapters - get it!), and he said that he consciously took less money to allow the Devils to ice the best team possible. He knew he was worth 8 million a year, but he got it down to 5.2 with the understanding that Lou would use the extra money to ensure the team was competitive year after year. I'm not slamming Ward for getting this much, but that would have been something to have kept in mind.

I'd be more inclined to think that Fraudeur knew he was worth 3-million a year without a good team and stifling system in front of him. But maybe I'm giving him too much credit.

He won a cup. Not many goalies can make that claim. I still think it's too much though. I wouldn't go higher than $5 per.

I know that he won the conn smyth... but so did Giguere... I could see 6.3 on a two or three year deal but for 6 years, I would have expected 5.5

Cam Ward is that team. They live and die on his shoulders. Its too much for any goalie to take away from the cap Imo but he definitely merits being one of the highest paid goalies in the NHL.
