I'm gonna have to go ahead and agree. It makes me sad when I lose reputation points and I'm not sure it serves any kind of purpose.

Actually, every time you rate someone you get kicked out -- or at least in my case, I have to click to return to the thread, it doesn't go there automatically like it does after posting. So I haven't been using it very much. When you see something truly brilliant or truly moronic, that's when you use it. Also I believe a post can only be plus'd (or minus'd) once.

You can never give a plus or a minus to one of your own posts. You can give a plus or a minus to anyone else's post.

When you plus someone's post they get one reputation point, and the post gets a rating bar -- all green at this point (if you minus'd it it will be a red bar). Someone else can come along and minus it, at which point that little bar becomes half green and half red. I'm thinking that as more people rate the post the bar will indicate the number of plus and minus ratings by the length of the green part relative to red.
