guys i'm not sure on this--12 year mutlimillion dollar contract and he may have an injury that will keep him out until december--lets say he comes back in dec--that means he misses trainning camp, he needs to get into game shape--there is no way chicago will be able to keep all their players with the cap so with the lineup they have now i would think they would want to win in the next year or 2, i'm not sure with this injury and if it keeps him out until december this move was worth it--GM got fired after this signing

Versteeg can step in for Hossa in the meantime... the Hawks have a load of talented forwards to fill the void and pick up the slack in his absence. Hossa could recovery quickly from this - he's not prone to injury and is in great shape. He'll be out for a blip in the contract.

yeah, i know what you mean and you are right in what you are saying, i'm just thinking that there is no way they will be able to keep all their players so it would make me hesitant to sign a player that will be out half the season(if this is true)--i know he will be there for a long time but i think they need to win in the next year or 2 with the players they have right now--he is a very good player however--i don't mind chicago--i like how they play so i do hope it does workout for them

Yeah, it's no secret they'll have huge cap issues after next season... someone will have to move.

Even without Hossa they make the playoffs. With Hossa there starting in December they'll even push for a top-four seed. With a well-rested Hossa in the playoffs they'll do well.

As for physicals and contracts, I would expect that to be a standard clause in any contract. The physical doesn't have to be taken until after. True, it sucks if you've missed out on other potential signings or trades, but that's he way it is.

So is this the solution the Hawks had all along for dealing with the cap crunch this coming season? Slicing out half of Hossa's Cap hit fixes a lot for this season anyway.

I don't think they have an issue this season... it's next season that's an issue isn't it?

This from Wings columnist Ansar Khan in Detroit today:

Marian Hossa's injury didn't occur during playoffs
Ansar Khan, MLive.com, July 22, 2009

Wings general manager Ken Holland said Marian Hossa did not injure his shoulder during the playoffs as indicated in a story in the Chicago Daily Herald. Holland said

Hossa had a slightly torn rotator cuff when the Wings signed him on July 2, 2008, but it wasn't anything significant.

"He was hurt before he got to us,'' Holland said. "Our doctors looked at him and we had conversations about whether to have surgery. Our doctors recommended he should have something done at some point but it's something he can play with.''

Hmm, not during the playoffs? Well, he certainly didn't hurt it hoisting the cup in his home town or anything.

Zing.

Zing what?

When Alfredsson plays with an injury, you all say how courageous he is...Hossa plays with an injury and all you can talk about is his new contract.

:KJK:

Fact is, many star players go through each season with injuries we rarely hear about.

Journos and fans yap about some player 'not coming through in the clutch'...even though that player might be on the ice playing with pain they can't even imagine.

If Hossa was a Senator, you'd be singing a different tune.

Dave, first of all, welcome back Sarcasm where've you been anyway?

Second, the "Sing" post is simply momentum -- Shabbs hasn't completely recovered from all that fluffing last week. Unless he's trying to catch you :^^^^:

Lastly, the whole point here is that Hossa *DID NOT* get injured playing hockey. We don't know how he got injured, but according to the Hawks it was not during the playoffs. Now, sure, the comments could be also interpreted to mean that he was injured *before* the playoffs, but in the context that it was brought up I certainly interpreted it as meaning the injury happened after he playing was over.

i believe a guy like Hossa needs to produce when it counts--he is a great player but in sports you are only good as your last game--he has time to bounce back but he needs to produce when it counts--detroit was very disappointed with him in the finals

Heh. He already had the surgery last Friday.

That article is dated last Thursday...
