Word is spreading fast that the Wings and Hossa are close to an extension. In the 6-8 year range between $6-7M/year.

How are they gonna fit this in with other still to sign?

Is this even possible under the cap?

After a quick review of the numbers over at nhlscap.com, I have deemed this rumor to be an impossibility. Even if he signs for the $6-million per season, that still puts the Red Wings over the salary cap with Samuelsson, Hudler, Kopecky, a backup goaltender, and possibly Chelios to re-sign. It's just not possible.

He'd have to be taking $4-million per season to make this realistic, and I just don't see that happening.

Then again, you never know.

Maybe Lidstrom is retiring.

Detroit has so many young guys that can step in right now and play in their entry level deals... this could go on for a long time.

They're not. It's simply not a possibility unless they want to start trading a whole bunch of guys. Starting with Fillpula, then Cleary, not re-sign Hudler, trade one other guy in the 2 millions like Holmstrom. So they'll have roughly the same amount committed to salary with 6 more players to sign.

Not possible.

From the Detroit News last night:

Wings deny report of pending long-team deal with Marian Hossa

The Detroit News, June 2 2009

Red Wings general manager Ken Holland has denied a report that the team is close to signing forward Marian Hossa to a long-term contract.

"There's no truth to any of that," Holland told The Detroit News on Tuesday.

Michael Farber of Sports Illustrated wrote that Hossa had a deal with the Wings that was "believed" to be for seven years.

Hossa will be an unrestricted free agent on July 1. He signed a one-year contract with Detroit last off-season.

Hossa will pick the next team he thinks will win the cup for the next season if Detroit fails this year, if Detroit wins, he goes to Edmonton or some bubble team that he could possibly put over the edge on a long term deal, or maybe the KHL if he has his cup ring and wants to go home.

Marian Hossa: Right time, wrong team -- again
June 12, 2009
Craig Custance, The Sporting News

DETROIT -- A quiet Marian Hossa answered questions following Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals. Losing to the Pittsburgh Penguins the way the Detroit Red Wings did wasn't easy. Especially not for Hossa.

"Losing Game 7 by one goal is tough," Hossa said.

Being on the wrong side of the Stanley Cup winner for the second consecutive season is tough, too. Last year, Hossa watched the Red Wings celebrate a Cup victory as a member of the Penguins.

On Friday, Hossa had to watch those same Penguins celebrate after beating the team he hand-picked as a free agent because he felt Detroit gave him the best chance to win a Cup.

"We played very good, but we came up short," said Hossa, who didn't score a goal in the finals.

It couldn't have been an easy moment for him -- and he wasn't getting sympathy from the other side. Penguins forward Pascal Dupuis was asked if there was any sympathy for Hossa. Even a little.

"Not at all," Dupuis said. "Sorry, but not at all."

The questions surrounding Hossa's future have already started. He's scheduled to become a free agent July 1, and minutes after the loss he was asked if he planned to return to Detroit.

"I'm sure we're going to have some talks and we'll see what happens," Hossa said. "Right now, I cannot tell you what's going to happen."

I don't think anyone should have any sympathy for Hossa, much less the Penguins who he ditched "to have the best chance to win a cup". I respect his decision to want to play for the prize, but he made his bed and he'll have to sleep in it. My guess is that he will sign somewhere else and never get back to the Finals again.

His agent kept saying he wants to stay in Detroit and there working on a deal, so I'm not too worried about it. Anyways even if he leaves ... we couldn't care less ... use that $$$ for something else. I'm hoping we pick up Laperriere or Neil.
