The Anaheim Ducks remain in a holding pattern waiting for Scott Niedermayer to determine his playing status for next season.
As of Friday morning, Niedermayer remained undecided and sources say he is having an extremely difficult time making a decision that he said he would make prior to the draft, weeks ago.
Ducks general manager Bob Murray met with Niedermayer's agent, Kevin Epp on Thursday night and spoke directly to his veteran defenceman, but wasn't given an answer.
That answer is expected at some point today.
Sources say Hockey Canada president Bob Nicholson also spoke with Niedermayer on Thursday and encouraged him to play next season and told him Canada considers him a key leader on the 2010 Canadian Olympic team.
If Niedermayer elects to play, there are no guarantees he will re-sign in Anaheim.
The Ducks should be considered the frontrunner, although San Jose, Vancouver and Calgary are also believed to have strong interest.
Meanwhile, a number of NHL teams continue to talk to Anaheim about possibly trading for defenceman Chris Pronger, who would be expendable if Niedermayer is returning.
But even if Niedermayer doesn't provide the Ducks with a firm answer today, it's still possible Pronger could be moved if Anaheim gets the right offer. There is reportedly no shortage of interest in the big defenceman.

This stinks if you are waiting on the Ducks trading Pronger or making him available.

Imagine being the guy who is busting his a$$ to make the club, this guy is wavering on whether or not to take your job and management is letting him. Worse he comes in half way and takes your job. Boy, that would piss me off....

A good way to get rid of that smell would be to say "nice knowing you, all the best" to Niedermayer. These annual antics are wearing thin.

And then you watch him play and realize just how much better and more qualified he is...

I am sure the Ducks would never do that, Niedermayer is just too good to throw away.

He is not too good to endure this Dung year after year. I'm being pretty generous too by saying the Ducks should say "nice knowing you, all the best". If I were GM it would be " Diddle this Dung, get the Diddle out".

I've said this before, I have no time for this. This is affecting too many people for him to pull a prima donna. Look, it's not like someone's holding a gun to his head saying "Decide now!" He's had weeks to think about it *since* he has stopped playing.

Man, I sure hope I don't get stuck behind him in a line at McDonald's.

Summer's in the air. The pools are out, radios are blaring, grass is being cut. And Scotty can't decide to play or not.

Apparantly TSN says he is coming back for 1 more year. Cue the Pronger trade rumours.
