This one was put out there by Dreger of TSN. It looks as though the asking price for negotiating rights to Jay Bo is a third rounder.

If we think we can sign him... Done. I don't think we can and I don't think we want to make a big cap mistake again.

The other problem that was pointed out was we don't have a third rounder but I don't think that would be a difficult situation to remedy if we were sure we could sign him.

There was a really interesting article in the Ottawa Sun two days ago about whether Bouwmeester was actually a bonafide number 1 defenseman in the NHL worthy of the 7+ million he'll want.

When you trade for the rights to a player... if you don't end up signing them, is the trade undone or do you lose what you gave up for his rights?

I think he is. It's hard to gauge a guy like that who has been playing for a mediocre Florida team. Same could have been said for Luongo, no?

Why wouldn't he want to play in Ottawa? Wasn't it said he is tight with Spezza? Wouldn't that be a good reason? Where would he go? Edmonton (no room)? Calgary (again, no room)?

That would all be dependent on whether or not the pick was a conditional pick, which I don't think Florida wants. They just want something for him, and a 3rd rnd pick isn't much to ask for leverage over a few other teams. Obviously if he has no intention of signing with your team, it is a waste.

Unless it's conditional, I think you lose it.

And I'm not sure it's possible for everything on one side of a trade to be conditional.

pretty cheap price if you get him, Sundin was a 2nd if I am not mistaken, but if you fail, then you lose that pick and have nothing to show for it, if Murray was to do this, he better be damn sure he would sign him and make it reasonable, if there is any shred of doubt, I would hold onto the 3rd round pick.

We don't have a 3rd round pick this year.

If's it's not tagged as 'conditional,' -- i.e., where certain conditions need to be met before the pick is given up -- then it's defacto 'unconditional' -- i.e., with no conditions attached to it.

Thanks for clearing that up guys!

I can't see Bouwmeester being 3 million dollars better than Kuba, for instance. I'm leaning heavily towards no thanks.

That's a little defeatist, no? Wink

If we were really confident we could sign him, I'd have no doubt we'd be able to acquire his rights. We have, for example, two second round picks.
