Hey Shabbs, way to dump ice water on yourself.  Shame you couldn't find a bigger bucket.  Man, your little one is all grown up.  I've got one headed to university in a few days.

Hey Prags, how much does university tuition run these days?

P.S., the Blue Jays really stink.

Depends on the program and the university. Engineering is generally more than science (or art). Bigger names more expensive. Apart from tuition, there's the cost of residence, books, food to consider. Some universities have better coop placement stats than others.

You ave more parameters than that? Very rough figure, $15k per year for engineering degree, books, residence and meal plan included. Entrance scholarships help ($3k per year if you have 85% and above, I think, goes up $1k for each additional 5%, and an extra $1k for French concentration).

When I did Engineering back in 1991-95, tuition was $4500/year. May need to step up the RESP contributions... HA HA!

I love this Sox team going into next year. Just need some pitching.

BTW my Commerce degree was about $8-9K/year

Yeah, I'm pumping the RESP for my two...education is so damned expensive.

I went to Algonquin from 2001-2004 and am pretty sure my tuition was about $3K per year + books. Then I had coop placements where I made all that money back and then some.

Tuition for my Master's degree (all of it) was $650. For my oldest he's got $27K in his RESP and we figured with scholarships that'll be enough to get him through two years (residence and meal plan), and after that he'll make real money in the co-op placements. Even though he is going yo Ottawa-U we are pretty much not making it an option for him, at least in year one (although he is digging in his heels about the meal plan). I think he's afraid of racking up student loans. I have no doubt he'll be fine (with his marks he'll continue getting $4k per year from the entrance scholarship and maybe get something else, like an NSERC one -- I lived off that one for 3 years). He's still committed to working as much as he can in the summers and do a couple of shifts on weekends (Walmart -- not great, but he'll probably make around $7K for the year). I'd prefer he got a job in a lab (he's doing bio-chem), crossing fingers.

Two reasons, mainly.  First, he needs to get more independent, more experienced (he's 18 and I was making his breakfast/lunch this morning FFS).  Second, he can be a giant PITA sometimes; life around Casa Prager will be somewhat quieter and less stressful.  Geez, the kid really needs to get a g/f, maybe then he will truly appreciate the thought of living on campus.

EDIT: Oh, I mis-read your question as "Why" and not "What". We're making on-campus living not-an-option. Mind you, he was >this< close to choosing Guelph, and was also quite interested in U of T, so if he chose either of those it wouldn't have been an option, either. My wife and I both had to take public transportation to get to university and that was in Montreal (better bus/train system). In our opinion, even if only in the first year, until he gets to know how everything works, it would be very beneficial for him to live on campus. A lot of his friends are bussing it and don't understand why he's spending all this money if he's staying in Ottawa. I'll bet around January/February, when they have to spend 45 minutes waiting for a bus because the previous one broke down, they'll be a little envious. Or when they have to ride 45 minutes and they can't even open up a book to study because there's no room, or when they are late for class because of traffic, etc.

Nope. Still dry as a bone.
