On the OT goal, looks like the chicago player was steered into Kipper, didn't skate into the crease, he just drove the net and the D-man couldn't handle him. playoff hockey like DTR said, and deep down, Keenan realizes that too, but if he doesn't say what he did, then he isn't calgary's coach.

Exactly, SF71...Keenan is being Keenan. He's been around long enough to know the 'game of gamesmanship'...

And with Keenan having been the Hawks' coach back in the late 80s and early 90s (BTW his current associate coach, former Flames HC Jim Playfair, played for him on those teams in Chicago), it makes it all a little bit spicier.

cool)

No question, in my eyes, that Ladd was 'helped' into Kipper's way, so it was a good call IMHO.

Also, Cammalleri will most certainly be suspended. How long, who knows...2-3 games maybe? or perhaps just one.

:KJK: That's certainly a high expectation. I don't know that he's at that level yet.

Toews isn't at Iginla's level as a player yet...few are...agreed?

But as a leader, Jonathan Toews is every bit the driving force by example, for his team, that Iggy is for the Flames.

I completely agree with you. Especially after seeing the first game. He is a captain through and through, and he lifted his team when they needed him the most. Hopefully he can keep it up.

For his forearm shiver into Havlat's face? I personally don't think so. They handed Chicago a good PP for that - and they had their chance at revenge. It's probably all good now.

I would be surprised if they suspend too, I know McKenzie was talking about this on the panel last night, he said if it had been later in the game, like the Carcillo incident, the suspension would happen, but he figured this one would go scot free.

From today's Globe & Mail:

No suspension for Cammalleri

TIM WHARNSBY Globe and Mail Update April 17, 2009 at 1:52 PM EDT

CHICAGO — Calgary Flames forward Mike Cammalleri won't be suspended for his shot to the head of Chicago Blackhawks overtime hero Martin Havlat on Thursday.

Cammalleri caught Havlat with a quick punch off a neutral zone faceoff early in the third period and was given a two-minute high-sticking penalty on the play in the 3-2 overtime win for the Chicago Blackhawks.

Cammalleri put the Flames ahead 2-1 about a minute after he exited the penalty box, but Havlat wound up scoring the tying and winning goals.

Some observers felt that if Philadelphia Flyers forward Dan Carcillo was suspended for one game for his actions against Pittsburgh Penguins forward Maxime Talbot that Cammalleri might receive the same supplementary discipline.

But that won't be the case. The difference is that Carcillo was a repeat offender and that unlike the Carcillo incident Cammalleri's actions did not occur late in the game with the outcome already decided.

On the Carcillo ruling, NHL senior executive vice-president Colin Campbell said, “We held a conference call Monday with the general managers and coaches of playoff teams and told them explicitly we would not tolerate attempts by clubs to ‘send a message' late in a game when the outcome had been determined. Organizations – players and coaches – will be held accountable for such actions.”

I think he didn't get suspended because, really, this was just a little whack. It's not like Havlat had a big bruise after. Definitely a penalty, definitely should have been roughing, not high sticking (if he had hit him with a stick like that, then we're talking 5-10 games).

Not a good start for the Hawks...down by two.

Kudos to the Flames...they are executing their game plan flawlessly...working their tails off.

The Blackhawks are letting their adrenaline get the better of them.

Terrific goal by Iginla.

Excellent goaltending by Khabby and Kipper.

Chicago will need to refocus for the second or the Flames will even up the series.

Helluva game!

Toews' two goals erase early deficit as Hawks take 2-0 lead over Flames

CHICAGO (AP)-- Jonathan Toews scored two of Chicago's three second-period goals as the Blackhawks rallied for a 3-2 victory over the Calgary Flames on Saturday night to take a 2-0 lead in their Western Conference quarterfinal series.

Toews' second goal of the period came on a rebound with only 24 seconds remaining as Chicago erased an early 2-0 deficit and continued its mastery of the Flames. Counting a 4-0 sweep in the regular season, the Blackhawks have won six straight against Calgary.

Games 3 and 4 will be played at the Pengrowth Saddledome on Monday and Wednesday.

Calgary's Miikka Kiprusoff stopped a hard slapper from the left circle by Dave Bolland, but the puck bounced off of him. Toews was right there to knock it in and give the young Blackhawks the lead and the momentum.

Blackhawks goalie Nikolai Khabibulin made 30 saves, as did Kiprusoff.

Jarome Iginla and Adrian Aucoin gave the Flames a 2-0 lead in the opening period, momentarily quieting another raucous crowd at the United Center.

But Chicago responded with a power-play goal from Toews early in the second and a tying score from Patrick Sharp before taking the lead.

The Flames were 0-for-43 on the power play over their final 10 regular-season games and 0-for-3 in Game 1 before Iginla converted. Dion Phaneuf fired a shot from the point, and after teammate Mike Cammalleri had a chance in-close, Iginla followed in the rebound past Khabibulin for a 1-0 lead.

With both teams a man down, the Flames made it 2-0 when former Blackhawks defenseman Adrian Aucoin shoveled in a shot from the crease after the puck bounced off Chicago defenseman Duncan Keith's stick and went under Khabibulin.

But on a power play 46 seconds into the second period, Toews, Chicago's 20-year-old captain, took a nice diagonal pass from Sharp and easily pushed it past Kiprusoff to cut it to 2-1.

Sharp tied it with just under six minutes to go in the second when he streaked to the net ahead of the Calgary defense and took a pass from Patrick Kane for the goal.

Khabibulin then turned away four shots on a Flames power play, and minutes later Toews put Chicago ahead.

Early in the final period it was Khabibulin making a great save on a close-in attempt by Olli Jokinen and another with his leg minutes later to stop Rene Bourque to keep Chicago ahead.

He made another big stop with 1:47 left when he turned away another shot by Jokinen.

Just like Game 1, Calgary came out aggressively and banged the Blackhawks around on the boards. Chicago's Martin Havlat, who scored two goals in the opener including the winner 12 seconds into overtime that provided a 3-2 victory, was a prime target for the Flames' hard checking, as was Kane.

Calgary had a prime scoring chance four minutes in as Todd Bertuzzi crossed the crease with Khabibulin off his feet, but he hit the post with his shot.

Game notes
Flames D Cory Sarich, who missed the final six games of the regular season and Thursday night's playoff opener with a foot injury, returned to the ice. ... Da Coach Mike Ditka dropped the ceremonial first puck. Cubs pitcher Ryan Dempster participated in a promotional puck shooting contest between the second and third periods.

Man, another heart breaker for Calgary. They needed the split badly. They need to win both at home now.

VERY bad news for the Flames...their D has been too slow to keep up with the Hawks over the course of a game...and Chicago's young bulls are hitting them hard.
