The first period the Blackhawks HAD to play.

15 shots to 3.

And three goals they need.

The Flames will not quit...so the Hawks will have to be ruthless.

Blackhawks strike early to push Flames to brink of elimination

CHICAGO -- Patrick Sharp and Kris Versteeg scored 19 seconds apart in a three-goal first period and the Chicago Blackhawks grabbed control early and beat the Calgary Flames 5-1 on Saturday night to take a 3-2 series lead.

Game 6 is Monday night at the Pengrowth Saddledome, where the Flames won Games 3 and 4 to even the first-round Western Conference series.

Chicago will have a chance in that game to wrap up the franchise's first playoff series win since 1996. A deciding Game 7 -- if needed -- would be back at the United Center on Wednesday night.

Chicago's Brent Seabrook opened the scoring on a power play 9:19 into the game and a little less than 2 minutes later, the quick goals from Sharp and Versteeg made it 3-0.

Dustin Boyd cut it to 3-1, scoring for Calgary early in the second.

But when Chicago's Andrew Ladd got it right back with a goal, Flames coach Mike Keeenan had seen enough and pulled goalie Miikka Kiprusoff with 6:14 left in the period. He gave up four goals on 18 shots.

Curtis McElhinney got the call and gave up Cam Barker's third goal of the playoffs, a slapper from the left circle that appeared to hit a skate and put Chicago ahead 5-1.

Chicago's Nikolai Khabibulin, who gave up nine goals in the two games at Calgary, made 19 saves. He held the Flames scoreless when they had two-man advantage for nearly a minute and a half in the final period.

Seabrook took a nice centering pass from Martin Havlat and beat Kiprusoff from between the circles. Chicago had an early 8-0 shots advantage, six on two power plays, before Seabrook's first career playoff goal.
The Blackhawks continued to pepper the goal, using their speed to beat the Flames to loose pucks. Chicago's dominant play was reflected in its 15-3 shots margin in the opening period.

Sharp muscled in a backhander from the crease to make it 2-0. Just 19 seconds later, Versteeg collected a loose puck that Calgary's Olli Jokinen didn't see and rammed it home from the left side, setting off a wild crowd at the United Center.

Boyd scored on a rebound after a driving shot by teammate Adam Pardy, but minutes later Ladd fought defenseman Dion Phaneuf and Kiprusoff in the crease before shoving it in -- a score upheld by video replay.

Game notes
Calgary's Rene Bourque returned after sitting out Game 4 after apparently aggravating an ankle injury. Craig Conroy and Daymond Langkow, who had to leave the fourth game with injuries, also were back for the Flames.

There is a young man from Ottawa who plays for the Blackhawks by the name of Ben Eager.

I would like to give a shout out to Benny, who plays with a heart as big as he is.

Benny reminds me of Hawks great Reggie Fleming, a true warrior who helped the Hawks win the Stanley Cup in '61.

Reg was a tenacious checker, could score big goals, hit like a freight train and could take anyone on in a scrap and get the better of them. And a TEAM guy.

Ben Eager is that kind of player.

48 years have passed and I still remember--though I was just six, or perhaps because I was just six years old then--that team, as if it all happened yesterday.

Reggie has been confined to a rehab centre since his stroke two years ago. His son Chris made this video as a tribute.

I truly believe this Hawks team has the most talent since the '61 Champions...and I am cheering for them to go as far as they can...who knows how far that is.

If they needed any inspiration, perhaps Reggie Fleming can be part of that.

This is an extraordinary time for these young men. And they must seize it.

As former Blackhawk star Jeremy Roenick said, "Do it now. Because you never know when you're going to get another chance."

Here Come The Hawks.

Reginald Stephen "The Ruffian" Fleming, (born April 21, 1936 in Montreal, Quebec) was a professional hockey player in the National Hockey League with the Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Black Hawks, Boston Bruins, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers and Buffalo Sabres. He also played for the Chicago Cougars of the World Hockey Association, as well as a number of minor league teams in other professional leagues.

His professional career spanned over 20 years. He was known as an aggressive and combative player who could play both forward and defence, as well as kill penalties.

After a junior career for two seasons with the Montreal Junior Canadiens of the Quebec Junior Hockey League(QJHL) and one year with St. Michael's of the Ontario Hockey Association(OHA), Fleming began his minor-pro career in the Hab's farm system with Shawinigan of the Quebec Senior League(QHL), followed by stops in Rochester (AHL) and Kingston (EPHL). His rugged style of play earned him a three game tryout with the Canadiens late in the 1959-60 season. That summer Montreal and the Chicago made a large nine player trade and Fleming became a member of the Black Hawks.

Fleming played four full seasons on a talented Chicago club with stars like
Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita, Glenn Hall and Pierre Pilote. Fleming's aggressive style of play added an important physical presence to the Black Hawks and helped the team win the Stanley Cup in 1960-61, Fleming's first in Chicago. Fleming scored an important goal in the final game of the NHL semi-finals against Detroit that year. He assisted on Bobby Hull's 50th goal the following season, helping Hull match the NHL record.

A popular player with Chicago, he was known for his grit and team spirit. His involvement in a number of notorious incidents gave him a reputation around the league as a tough customer and an intense competitor.

Prior to the 1964-65 season, Chicago dealt Fleming to the Boston Bruins. Used primarily as a forward, he recorded personal highs of 18 goals and 23 assists in 1964-65. Midway through the next season, he was traded to the New York Rangers. He would spend the remainder of that year and the following three with a rapidly improving Ranger club. Although a popular and consistent performer with the Rangers, he was sent to the Philadelphia Flyers for the 1969-70 season. His experience and combativeness helped the small and unaggressive Flyer team. Left unprotected in the 1970 expansion draft, Fleming joined the Buffalo Sabres, where he recorded his career high in penalty minutes in 1970-71, his last NHL season.

After minor league stints with Cincinnati(AHL) and Salt Lake(WHL) in 1971-72, Fleming returned to Chicago, joining the Cougars of the newly-formed WHA. After scoring 23 goals and playing his usual rugged style in 1972-73, injuries began to reduce his effectiveness the following season, his final season in the WHA.

After playing for a few more seasons in the minors in the mid-western United States, Fleming retired in 1978.

Ottawa's own Ben Eager does his best to live up to the legacy of Reggie Fleming in this snapshot from the Calgary Herald, of his tussle last night with Mr. Adam Pardy. Or perhaps Mr. Eager was inspired by the Sports Illustrated cover of "Those Big Bad Black Hawks."

Mr. Eager is also a fine hockey player and, I am told, a very personable young man.

Quite a few of my friends grew up playing with Ben Eager, Cam Barker, and Philadelphia's Claude Giroux. Having met them through my friends, I can say all of them are stand-up guys who deserve to be playing the highest level of hockey in the world and deserve all the good things that come their way.

Blackhawks advance for first time since 1996

CALGARY, Alberta -- The Chicago Blackhawks won their first playoff series in 13 years, eliminating Calgary by beating the Flames 4-1 in Game 6 of their first-round Western Conference matchup Monday night.

Chicago's previous playoff series win was a four-game sweep of Calgary in 1996.

Patrick Kane had a goal and an assist for Chicago, with Adam Burish and Brian Campbell also scoring. Dustin Byfuglien added an empty-net goal and had two assists. Rookie Kris Versteeg, a Calder Trophy nominee, also contributed two assists.

Fast Facts

• The Blackhawks advanced to the second round for the first time since 1996.
• The Flames were eliminated in the first round for the fourth consecutive season.
• Brian Campbell's goal ended a 48-game goal drought.
-- ESPN Stats & Information

Todd Bertuzzi scored the lone goal for the Flames, who managed just two goals in the final two games of the series. They were ousted in the first round for a fourth straight season.

Nikolai Khabibulin played a stellar game in net for the Blackhawks with 43 saves. He robbed Calgary's Olli Jokinen on scoring chances in the first and second periods.

Calgary's Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 12 shots in the loss.

The Blackhawks will play Vancouver in the next round.

With 14 players under the age of 25, the Blackhawks are the youngest team in the NHL. Their lack of playoff experience was thought to be a disadvantage heading into the series, but the Hawks were poised and tenacious against the more-experienced Flames.

They were quicker out of their end, faster on the forecheck and weren't afraid to engage Calgary physically. Chicago was also the healthier team through the series, too.

The Flames pressed for goals in the third period and pulled Kiprusoff with more than 2 minutes remaining. But the injury-riddled club didn't have the depth to push past the youthful Blackhawks and send the series back to Chicago for a Game 7.

Calgary defenseman Dion Phaneuf was scratched because of a hard check and helmet-to-helmet contact from Chicago's Troy Brouwer in Game 5. Without Phaneuf and Robyn Regehr, who missed this series because of a knee injury, the Flames' defense couldn't contain Byfuglien, who assisted on Chicago's two goals in the first period.

The Flames ended the regular season scoreless on their last 45 power-play chances. They were only marginally better during the postseason with two goals on 18 opportunities while a man up.

With Bertuzzi in the penalty box, Kane made it 1-0 just 2:20 in. From the bottom of the circle, Versteeg tried to connect with Byfuglien in front of the net for a tip-in, but the puck deflected out front for Kane.

Byfuglien lugged the puck and circled behind the net to the half-boards before passing to Burish, who beat Kiprusoff midway in the opening period.

Defenseman Campbell's slap shot from the point through traffic was deflected and beat Kiprusoff to the glove side for a 3-0 edge in the second period.

Bertuzzi skated deep down the wing and beat Khabibulin with a sharp-angled shot over the Russian's shoulder 54 seconds into the third session.

Game notes
Chicago outscored Calgary 10-5 in the second periods in the series . . . With the exception of their run to the Stanley Cup final in 2004, the Flames haven't made it out of the first round of playoffs since winning the Cup in 1989.

Jarome Iginla is reputed to be a great captain. So many European captains have been denegrated because of their teams lack of playoff success, for example, Naslund, Koivu, Alfredsson (outside of Ottawa), Sundin etc.. The Calgary Flames have won 3 playoff series, all in the same season, with Mr. Iginla. So which is it, is Iginla a bad captain/leader or is it that the hockey world has been a little hard on Alfie, Koivu and the others.
