Why would they? Tavares would be on a rookie contract.

And why would we? Spezza is proven, Tavares is not.
Who said I wanted us to take Tavares Wink

Basically, his career is going down a very wrong path at this point. He wont be the first guy with that much tallent to be a PPG player that never wins anything.

From here on out, Spezza is known as Pierre Turgeon. A guy who puts up points and does nothing else to help his team!

Spezza is second on our team behind only Alfredsson in terms of take-aways and has been phenomenal in terms of winning face-offs.

Well that's true, but then our forward corps would be absolutely dreadful going forward.

We'd have two aging great forwards and two young great d-men.

Hard to build a team around that, unless you're suggesting that we try for Hall next season.

How do you know that if a guy like Vermette isnt given a chance to be the number 1 center he cant be just as effective? How do you know that a more resposnible guy playing those big mins, this team wouldnt be better.

Saying our offense would be none exsistant without Spezza isnt true, because its none exsistant with Spezza. If someone else had the opportunities Spezza has had, who knows what could happen.

As tallented as Spezza is, the team will be able to play without him there, and hopefully it happens.

Well, while you two were discussing The Spezza Conundrum, Buffalo beat the Rangers and the Sens are now 15 points out of a playoff spot.

Faceoffs, sure, those are nice to win. He is making 7 million dollars, better be doing more than that. If we want someone who can win faceoffs and is horse sh it in their own zone, Perrault is available somewhere.

The Sens have committed 49 million dollars to the guy, do you actually realize how much the Sens are depending on Spezza to be prouctive, motivated, responsible, and lead? Time for the "he didnt play bad" isnt going to cut it. There is no reason Speza shouldnt be the best player on the ice for his team, night in and night out.

Say what you want, defend him, he is getting paid elite money, for an elite role. He has been given the ball, all he has done thus far is fumble it.

I really do hope they lose on Tuesday, that will salt away any thought of the playoffs for people who actually believe its possible.

And...the Leafs just got a point in the SO loss to the Canucks, so they pass the Sens tonight.

Well, you conveniently forgot the take-away section.

I agree that he has to be better, but getting any offence going under Hartsburg was impossible and under Clouston it's pretty evident he's been injured.

There is always an excuse for Spezza, and if he is hurt, and it is his back, then we may have a lemon on our hands now dont we. A bad back at 25, it doesnt go away. Just more reason to get rid of him while we still can.

Take aways sure, he has the most ice of any forward aside from Alfi.

An injury prone, bad back, defensive liability, with a questionable attitude... def worth 49 mil.

Another year of losing? No thanks. Hall would be great to have, but nothing is worth another season like this one.

I see what you're saying about the age up front and youth one the back end, but I actually think our forward core would be better without Spezza. Don't get me wrong: It would be outstanding to get Spezza of 05-06 back, but this new half-useless version is a waste of space. If we rely on him to win games and he's only good once every two games, then what good does that do for us? We rarely win games when Spezza is playing poorly, so we'd be pretty much Diddle out of the playoffs year-in, year-out until he is ready to compete on a nightly basis.

Our forward group might be a little weaker, but our team overall would be much stronger. There's a reason why (well respected) people in the hockey community believe that we will never win with Spezza... Imo get what you can for him at the draft and cut your losses.

I wish I could be that politically correct when talking about Spezza, haha.

Addition by subtraction IMO. Spezza is not, and never will be the be all and end all in Ottawa. I can think of way better ways to spend 7 million over the next 6 years.

Name one team that did not have a legendary Brodeur/Roy type goalie that won the Cup without a top centre.

Spezza's come close to winning twice already in his career.

Our forward corps would be terrible. We have no one even resembling a top-line centre in the oerganization apart from him.

Goodness. Mario had a bad back. And if that wasn't enough, he went out and got cancer! The really should ave gotten rid of him when they had the chance.
