There was a trade announced on the floor right before Detroit was to make their selection. From the "Winging It in Motown" blog:

With the 29th overall pick, the Detroit Red Wings choose to trade their only first round pick to the Tampa Bay Lightning. In return, they got the 32nd overall pick and the 75th overall pick (third round). The Lightning used their upgraded pick to take Carter Ashton.

Wings have only picked in the first round 4 times in the last 10 years. One of those 4 was last year when they skipped Markstrom Facepalm
