T.O. should start with "a" team before graduating to "another" team.

NHL denies interest in second GTA franchise
Canwest News Service

Thursday, April 23, 2009

Adding a second National Hockey League franchise in the Toronto area isn't on the league's radar, according to the NHL's front office.
The Globe and Mail reported in its Thursday editions that NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly met with a group in downtown Toronto last week to discuss the prospects of a second team in the GTA.

But in an e-mail to Canwest News Service on Thursday, Daly, while admitting the meeting took place, denied there are any serious talks in the works.

"No, the NHL is not giving any consideration to putting a second team in the Toronto area," he said in the e-mail.

The Globe and Mail reported that the group wants to build an arena on land owned by businessman Victor De Zen in Vaughn, which is north of Toronto. It also said that NHL Players' Association executive director Paul Kelly took part in the 2 1/2-hour meeting.

Daly admitted that he had, in fact, met the group.

"Yes, we had a meeting. The meeting did not involve Paul Kelly," Daly said.

Rumours of a potential second team in the GTA have been circulating for more than six months, and have gained momentum since the financial struggles facing the Phoenix Coyotes have been made public.

Coyotes owner Jerry Moyes has received interest from potential investors in the team, which will reportedly loss more than $30 million US this season.

Earlier this month, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman told Fox Sports Arizona that reports of the team's demise were "hogwash" and "ridiculous" and that the NHL was working with the Coyotes to find new investors or a buyer for the team.
