Doesn't mean he's making the team but he's doing so the right things to make the decisions really hard. Tom Pyatt won't be getting by looks alone.

Those are some pretty serious guys to be training (and allegedly) keeping up with. If I am Colin White, Logan Brown or Filip Chlapik who are favourites to land a spot I'd be really worried about Formenton and Batherson passing them on the depth chart. IMO, Nick Paul's chances at this point are nil. Even someone like Gagne and Perron are in serious trouble.

Perron had an injury that held him up last year. He's not expected to do anything other than continue development at the AHL level.

Gagne had a very good year but he's a longer term project. There's no pressure yet to make the NHL.

Paul is at the end of his rope. He either makes the Ottawa roster or he's trade bait or KHL hopeful.

I still think Chlapik and White are way ahead. Wayne's younger brother practiced with him in the off-season. Showed some skill in that Seven-Up ad. Doesn't mean much. The Generals practice with the Globetrotters all the time, too.

Batherson will be battling with Formenton and Brown and Pyatt, I think.

From what I read Perron just isn’t physically able to play in the pros so far. Gets pushed off the puck too easily. Maybe he puts on weight and figures it out but so far we shouldn’t hold our breath

I was just reading about our prospects over on silver seven and I just can’t escape the fact that we always seem to overvalue our prospects constantly. I remember when pumped, Prince and Paul were our top prospects and man on their site saw Paul as a sure fit into our top6 and Perron as a diamond in the rough. I’m sure some of the prospects we highly value these days will likely be fringe NHLers but I do feel a lot more optimism for our pool of prospects than I have felt for a few years.

I just wish we had a more subjective eye on the pool and that the org more importantly did the same. They’ve held on to prospects for far too long. I remember when Oaul was talked about as a trade candidates teams were inquiring about or the oft rumoured Ceci missing piece into big trades(the hall rumour.)

I’m not sure where it all goes wrong, is the team not doing a good job at player development or are they overvaluing them. I feel that we do a good job drafting but maybe we should be bringing more season young players.

I think if the Sens trade Kalrsson they should make a play for some young Dmen with our pool of existing prospects. I wouldn’t mind seeing white traded TBH. Possibly Brown also if the return for Kalrsson includes a guy like Cody glass.

Let’s just get some known commodity instead of just hoping each and all prospects pan out because so far it seems the team has missed the boat on quite a few prospects that had their value diminished.

What do you guys think?

Show me evidence of good drafting in the last, oh, 6-7 drafts. 2011 they got Pageau in the 4th and Dzingel in the 7th. But they also got Zibanejad (underwhelming when compared to the two center taken after him, and gone from the org), Noesen, Puempel, Prince, Claesson, Kramer, Fransoo. Pageau, Dzingel and McCormick are the only players left of the 10 picks. If we managed to have on to even one of our *three* first rounders I'd be ready to call it a good draft. As it stands, I can only say it was a terrible waste of three first rounders.

2012 we got Ceci. It wasn't an off the board pick. He fell to us at 15th. Should have gone a bit earlier.

2013 I think Harpur is there only one left.

2014 is Englund and Perron. Perron still he's a chance but had to show it this year.

2015 and later it's too early to tell.

Here are the first round picks since 2009 (year after Karlsson):
Cowen
Zibanejad
Noesen
Puempel
Ceci
Lazar
Chabot
White
Brown
Bowers (gone)
Tkachuk
Bernard-Docker

It was pretty bad for several years

I think you can add stone to that list, Hoffman also. zibanejad was an alright pick. I even think its hard to fault too many teams on the top 10 picks since there's almost a consentual around the league on who they are (plus or minus falling or going up a position. if anything, solid drafting is seen in the later rounds as opposed to the first round.

I think the team has played it a little safe in some years. in the first round to be exact.i wasn't a fan at all of the Lazar pick. neither was I of the Cowen pick but that draft in retrospect aunt very good.

also be careful. when you mention certain players drafted. I ask you to go back (past the 1st and 2nd rounders)and see how many players were drafted passed some players that people complain about that were passed on. often, the drafts are pretty dry. I don't count when theres only one standout per round as luck has a lot to do with it.

I do think that we're slightly above average in drafting. could it be better? absolutely. should Melnyk invest more in that? you bet. but I bet he won't.

I do have my questions about development though.

Stone read drafted in 2010. I only looked at 1st round picks start Karlsson. The full draft results I looked at were only for 2011 onwards.

My point really was that our drafting of late has been poor.

You're right in that, for example, when we drafted Ceci there really wasn't a better player available. If they let him brew a bit on the AHL land deployed him as an offensive defenseman I think we would have had a stuff on our hands.

However most drafts were not like that. You already mentioned Cowen and Lazar. Think back to when Zibanejad was taken, many people wanted to take Couturier instead. Scheifele and Hamilton would have been better picks as well.

Yeah and it’s a good thing they didn’t listen to me on the zib draft. I wanted Strome hahaha.

I also question their development decisions. Ceci could have had spent more time in the A. I definitely think Lazar should have stayed in junior one more year and ill be very annoyed if thachuk is played on the Sens if he’s remotely not ready to do so.

I think Tkachuk has genetics anf family on his side. He grew up in an NHL pro's family from day one, he's seen what his father had to do and now his brother. I'm sure he's also talked, extensively, to both. He didn't the summer working out with Gary Roberts and other NHLers in his group.

I have a good feeling about this.

I certainly did a 180 on this kid since the draft. It wasn't quite the same level as that Habs fan but I was but happy with the pick. Glad I was wrong.

And I still think taking the 4th overall was the right move.

I do too. This year could have turned out totally different and what is now the 1st could have been the 12th or 15th. Dorion would have been crucified if he gave up the 4th to Colorado and ended up with the 15th this year.

IMO the Sens will be 2-3 years away from being good for 10 or so years. They'll have another top-five pick next year and if they don't it's because they've improved enough to compete in more games.

10 years is a long time. I hope you’re right. I doubt you will though if Melnyk stays main owner.

Unless Colorado drafts 1st or 2nd, tkachuk has proved he's a huge talent worthy of a top 3 pick. Look at him go.. 20.goals and 20 assists as a 19 year old. Disgusting when he gets stronger and smarter and bigger
