Are you suggesting a transfer of captaincy to stone or even more inflammatory, trading karlsson?

I saw all the captaincy I needed out of karlsson in the playoffs last year.
I’m fine with him wearing the C. What needs to happen is likely having more than a few leading voices in the locker room.

I have nothing against him personally, but if this is the Karlsson we can expect going forward, he isn't worth shelling out $12+ million in my opinion.

I was just saying, there has been something like 8 non Canadian captains who won the Cup.
I think you are partially right. But there lies the question, is karlsson going to stay that way? Is this still because he has a nagging injury?
Because yeah, he’s not worth 12 mill but he will want it.

I have a feeling he can come back and be he player he was but it might need another year and another operation. That’s a lot to deal with.
I don’t think he’s the next Bobby Ryan of this team but if he lacks his mobility than he’s more likely an 8mill Dman not 12. Tough call. But I can’t see this team without kalrsson. I guess if a team offers us the moon in échange you have to think long and hard but it could still very much backfire on us.

I think Karlsson gets back to his old self by next season but the Sens wind up dealing him anyway.  Newport has Carey Price and if they want the same deal for Karlsson at 10.5 per year then Melnyk will likely not sign off on it.  The cap hit and term aren't the problem it's the structure. Heavily front loaded with signing bonuses.  15M in year 1 and 2 with 13M paid on July 1st of each of those years. I can't see Melnyk dropping 13M before generating any revenue.

Good point but Melnyk has to know the value of Kalrsson to this team in the sale of he franchise. He is an asset if he’s under contract and a valuable one in terms of marketing this team. I think this goes both ways. What’s a few millions now if it means he gets higher value in a sale.

I agree with both sides of the argument. It will definitely be a front-loaded deal which is why I can see him having an AAV of $10-11M. He won't be making $10M+ in year 8 of his deal.

I'd be very careful even thinking about trading Karlsson. Clearly he's having a rough patch, but also very clearly as he goes the entire team goes.

It's scary actually. It makes getting Chabot acclimatized to the nhl even more important to avoid this kind of situation.

Also...beware of the big trades mid season that completely Diddle with chemistry

Karlsson was a beast in the second half last season. Hopefully that happens again here.

The Duchene trade timing was pretty good as it was less than a month into the season. It takes time to gel when you swap your #1 centre for another, completely different one

I think Melnyk signs it hoping that he'll have the team sold before he has to pay a penny under Karlsson's new contract.

I saw a stat yesterday which essentially had all of Ottawa's numbers this year as the same as last year. They've been on the wrong side of close games. I think they can still turn it around but think they need to do something to shock the system. Boucher has to let the reigns on his system go a bit and let his players play.

yeah I know , I had a Facepalm moment. But again,I wanted to keep Turris for 6 years but the org did not. I’d argue we would have been better with him but the org saw it differently.

I wonder if philly and Ottawa couldn’t help each other out?

No chance it would have been Ceci for Duchene. They needed a third team to maximize their assets

Dorion and by association Boucher will start feeling heat soon - like....now.

Tough to fire Boucher after the season he just had.

It's easy.  Melnyk gets annoyed - and he has a right - and gasses Dorion and that's that

Plenty of examples of coaches getting the Jack Adams one year as fired the next.

But don't forget, last year they were just as bad and goaltending bailed them out. Then Boucher had the screaming practice and they played better.

Well, they just had this year's screaming practice.
