Pretty scathing remarks on the Sens from Craig Button.

Yep.  Here's the full quote:
---
“I think Bryan Murray’s saying that," began Button. "I don’t believe it. I don’t think Jason Spezza shies away from it. I think Jason Spezza has been a very good player for the Ottawa Senators. I don’t think he shies away from any type of pressure. I don’t think you can perform at over a point a game played in the National Hockey League if you’re afraid of the pressure.
“And I think it’s a situation where, I do – I think it’s unraveling in Ottawa. And I saw what happened last year with Alfredsson. You know, they wanted him to have a different role. They didn’t to pay him. I think that’s exactly what’s happened with Spezza and I think that players are now saying ‘You know what? Get me my life jacket, I know where the life raft is. I’m outta here.’
“Because I don’t think the Ottawa Senators are on a path of what you would call upward mobility. I think they’re on the downward path.”
---

Spezza might have requested a trade because he feels like the Sens are on a downward path...who knows for sure?  As we've said many times, we'll know for sure if we are unable to retain Ryan and MacArthur.  Then we're Cussed for good until Melnyk sells.

I wonder what Button's bosses at TSN feel about his comments on the Sens after they just paid a hell of a lot of money to get the TV rights.

What a way to start off that relationship, pissing off the team. I would think Button would not be very welcome at CTC.

Button is out to lunch. He basically just said that the Sens are in this situation with Spezza because they wanted to change his role without paying him for it.

What? That's completely baseless, unless they started negotiating early (and, by doing so, violating the CBA) and the Sens refused to pay him appropriately.

He's talking out of his Donkey.

The quote is just noise. He doesn't actually say anything that could be proven. No one is going to rescind his media pass over this, and his bosses at TSN aren't going to be interested in this.

I don't recall him saying that except in the context of him being 19. But I suppose you see how he develops and if he's a top-six player in 2-3 years and you have Turris and Zibanejad as your 1-2, then maybe having Lazar as a winger is not that bad. The kid's got wheels to go outside, too.

Has Button seen any Sens games? Did he at least look at stats? As much as I've defended Spezza (and still do, to a point) you really can't gloss over his plus/minus as compared to the other top-six players. Hell, even if you throw in his PP points he's still -4. And of course if you watch him play the lazy skating was too frequent.

I can get over the occasional bad drop pass or the sub-par coverage, but when the guy is simply not skating it's a hard to get that visual out of your brain when you get scored on.

I think they want him to start as a winger on the 3rd line. It certainly would help his development.

I think it's based on because Alfie left last season and now Spezza. It would be a moot point if Ryan and Mac sign.

Yep. I'll only start to panic if Ryan is not re-signed.

Obviously. Still, he doesn't say anything of substance. Saying that Alfie left because the Sens wouldn't pay him, then saying Spezza is leaving for "exactly" the same reason is nonsensical, and therefore doesn't deserve our attention.

Button is an idiot. No one can put up a point-per-game if they can't handle the pressure? Based on what? The guy makes no sense.

Noise. Nothing but noise.

Allegedly Ottawa made a contract offer to Spezza that was refused. Could've lowballed him, like we did The Alfie. Like The Alfie situation, we'll never know the truth of it.

So that Hockey Stat twitter had another tidbit that I think is absolute Dung..

The Hockey Chat‏@TheHockeyChat
The Ottawa Senators have contacted the Toronto Maple Leafs regarding the availability of Nazem Kadri #NHL No official offer as of yet

Meh, wouldn't surprise me if we asked about Kadri, although it's hard to imagine THAT deal ever getting done with Toronto.

Funny, I guess I should be more concerned about losing Spezza but I'm absolutely not.  Guys like that are swapped all the time in the NHL.  Gaborik, Nash, Richards, carter, vanek.  It happens all the time.  This isn't a Kopitar or a toews, this is a great offensive player - that's all he is.  You can get one on most deadlines if you want to pay.

I'm not trying to downplay Spezza because we're about to lose him - ill always enjoy watching him, but it's not the doom and gloom some people think.

Maybe I'm off on this and we're Cussed, but I think we'll put his money into two top 9 guys and see a pretty solid team next year.

Our record is better over the past two years without Spezza in the lineup.  Plus, he's due for another lengthy back injury.  Honestly, it's the right time to trade him.  He's peaked.

That's the one thing he said that actually I agree with. Spezza loves the pressure and attention, he's just not very good at handling it in a physical way. He's had to deal with the pressure and attention since he was in highschool or earlier. He *wants* to be the #1 center, he wanted the 'C'. He's a PPG player in the playoffs as well as the regular season, so it's not like his production dries up when the checking gets tighter.

P.S. All of that, of course, before his back surgery last year. I have no idea which way he will go now -- continue downhill is likely, but it's just as likely that last year was an aberration and he'll get back to the workout regimen and will play next year like he did two years ago.
