I heard this morning that he asked for 12 m for two years. Where'd you hear the 4.5 and 5.5 from. I'm really trying to figure out what went wrong here.

Alfie had 10 70+ point seasons and never made over $5M a year.

Initially discussions were for a two year deal, but then Alfie dropped it to a one year deal, $6M. Trying to save us some dough, again.

That's the other thing, too. He was probably feeling like he was on top of the world, ready to commit to 2 years and not leave any doubt at the end of next season as to whether he would be back or not and the team counters with 1 year @ $4m. That had to feel like a punch in the gut.

Most Gretzky made was 6.5. So what? If people want to take sides fine but both sides screwed up in this... one decided to be a Richard about things and the other had no patients. Both are now moving on and the Sens are a better team today then they were yesterday.

Indeed. Now that we've said "So long Alfie", one question remains... "What's next?"...

Anyways, I am of the opinion Alfie made a stupid decision... either he truly believes Detroit is a better team or he made a snap choice because he was pissed off. He's the one that has to live with it, not anyone else.

They could have given him $5.5M, they lowballed him because they needed room in the budget to make other additions and resign a few players.

he was probably more offended they couldn't make room in the "budget" for him.

Didn't Gretzky retire 14 years ago? Please don't use that as a comparison.

I DO want to take sides, and I am on Alfie's side. We tried to make him take a big discount again, when we shouldn't have.

The fans have to live with it too, old friend.

I'd say the next phase of the rebuild is on, the team needs to be able to win without him.

It shouldn't have happened this way but at some point the team would have learn to play and win without him.

What's next? Alfie on his couch in Gothenburg watching Spezza give the cup to Philips.

Fans have short memories, Sens win anything this year or make any kind of run and it will be "Spezza is the man" and "Alfie who". Again, Detroit getting knocked out by Ottawa would be amazing.

We're a better team with Alfie, and the only reason we don't have him AND Ryan AND MacArthur is because Melnyk is in financial trouble and/or a cheap bastard.

Pretty much. Like the millions of fans who said they wouldn't watch a game this year:l:

I wonder how many (if any) cancelled their season tickets over Alfie-gate.

Are the Sens a better team today then they were on Thursday? Yes. Good enough for me at this point.

I have a buddy that works with the Sens, and they were fielding calls on Friday from irate season ticket holders wanting to cancel.
