As much as that could be a mistake, we managed without Cowen for most of the season. Cowen has alaso had two major surgeries by a fairly young age. He could be a beast or he could be a bust. Tough call, for sure, but Monahan could be worth it.

Yeah I'd look at Conacher as being more of a wildcard. He needs to figure out what his game is. Too many times, especially against Pitt, he seemed more focused on being a pest than putting the puck in the net. I'm really not sure what to make of him

Oh Cowen is guarantee? I like him a lot, think he could be a big time player for a long, long time. But if you want to use the "Monahan isn't proven"... then Cowen is extremely injury prone and has had 2 major surgeries. Does that trend continue? Does he even reach his potential?

Monahan is more of a sure thing as #1 center than Cowen is a #1 d man. What's harder to obtain? #2, 3 D man or a #1 center? #1 centers can only be had int he draft... you get one chance.

I wonder what the asking price for Perron is? He's another guy that seems to fit this system, budget, and LW need

Doubt that.

That's exactly who they would want.  Might be a good move because fact is you can draft a #3, 4 D man (which is what they want Cowen to be in Ottawa) in the later rounds or even sign/trade for them.  A guy like Monahan could be had maybe once a decade from the 5th spot.

Without Cowen you are weakening the team right now and hoping Monahan makes up for it.  No guarantee you replace Cowen either.

Like I said a couple posts earlier, they did alright without Cowen for most of last season, and Cowen was pretty instrumental in losing two of those games against the Pens. Not blaming the loss on only him, nor am I saying he is a bust -- the guy was coming off an injury/surgery that should have kept him off the ice until this summer. But fact is we got into the playoffs without Cowen and with Spezza, Karlsson, Michalek missing most of the season. We've got the goaltending to survive without Cowen until a Cowen-lite comes along (and Borowiecki can fill in in the immediate term).

Also, no one thought Methot was as good as he obviously is... that makes Cowen a lot easier to trade and a lot easier to handle. The need for that work horse D man isn't there like it was 2 seasons ago.

We'd then have to address adding two top 4 d-men in the near term as well as adding a top-six forward which given the 'budget' I am not sure we can afford to do.

The moves I see Murray making are to trade packages of players/prospects for affordable players who can step in now and make an impact.
Cowen + would get into the top 3.

No it wouldnt
LOL you say that without knowing what would be added. Lets go with Cowen + 3 1st round picks.

Regardless, Murray is not going to move Cowen, nor is he going to try to move up into the top 3.

That was half a season. Cowen's performance deserves a mulligan given he was coming off a serious injury.

Our defense needs to be better to win a Cup, it can't just be OK in a lockout season.

It's an awfully soft defense without Cowen.

I'm not overly high on Cowen myself. Going back to his WJHC days I wasn't very impressed and with his past injuries I'm not sure he'll top out the way Ottawa had originally hoped. That said, moving him now would be detrimental and forces Murray to acquire two top-four d-men assuming the role can't be filled internally.

Karlsson, Methot, Phillips, Gryba, Wiercioch, Boro/Benoit doesn't really instill any type of confidence. That said, acquiring Douglas Murrary or another towering d-man makes this problem vanish instantly.

Methot is not soft. Gryba is not soft. Phillips is not soft. Borowiecki is not soft. There are prospects, free agents, trades as well.

Cowen took out Pacioretty in game 1, he disappeared for the rest of the series.

Methot and Gryba are the only ones who are not soft. Phillips is old and Borowiecki isn't a roster player and may never be one.

Getting a solid top 4 D is not easy nor cheap.

Cowen will not be traded. Listen to Murray in their draft interviews.

Needless to say there could very well be no action by Ottawa today. I know I've been disappointed in years past on draft day and given the fact that there's been no movement thus far, I have a feeling we will all be disappointed come the 10th overall pick in the draft.

Look at your own username. Douglas Murray is garbage at his age.

How much worse is he than having an injured Cowen all season?

Cowen's had one injury the last 4 years. ONE.

He won't get injured again.
