I think there's always a top line forward that comes out every year after the top 15.

I don't know about *every* year, but look at 2003:
#17 Zach Parisee
#19 Ryan Getzlaf
#23 Ryan Kesler
#24 Mike Richards
#28 Corey Perry
But other than that one year, nothing jumps out between 2000 and 2005 (second half of 1st round).
Going earlier, 1999 had Havlat at #26, in 1996 you had Briere at #24, in 1993 it was Allison at #17, Saku Koivu at #21 (not really a big scorer) and Bertuzzi at #23 (where would he be if the Moore incident never happened).
So, yeah, it happens, but not every year.

I haven't checked the later rounds but I'm sure there are some majors steals in there.

FWIW, your example year is widely regarded as the best draft year ever. Great draft, but not the best example to demonstrate the norm.
that's not what I was implying. I was talking about the fact that BM has been able to regularly bring in role players from the lower picks thru the draft and undrafted players that we can afford at this stage to not use our top pick on a guy that is good defensively but may turn out to be nothing more then a third liner if his offense doesn't develop. by that i meant Gautier. I'd rather we take a risk on someone that seems to have a higher sealing but more risk to them.Ev wrote:my point was Zibanejad is not a role player lol.

Sens picked 29th that year.. took Patrick Eaves. Left and taken in the 2nd round were: Loui Eriksson, Patrice Bergeron, Shea Weber, David Backes.
But also remember who the GM was.. and his drafting record.. Muckler.. with his 2 full time scouts and a couple of part-timers.
