A legitimate question.

Redden, Chara, Hossa, Kelly, Emery, Daugavins are 2 wins away from being in the Cup Finals.
I guess the Pens should have tried harder to get someone -- anyone -- from the Sens roster.
Meh. A lot of teams could say similar things. Of those, only Chara & Hossa sting a little. The Hossa trade wasn't bad at the time (with only hindsight being able to predict the full douchiness of Heatley), so Chara is the one that hurts...and at the time Redden was pretty freaking good, so picking him over Chara didn't seem as ridiculous as it does now.
Plus, the Big Z and Hossa are two extremely likeable individuals, so it actually is kind of nice to see them have success.

I challenge you to find anyone who thought -- at the time -- that keeping Chara was not a slam-dunk decision.
Also, I may be in the minority, but I never understood the love for Redden. To me he was always just OK, nothing special.

Man the damage Muckler did to the Ottawa franchise is enough to make you sick... it actually does make me physically ill.
Also, the issue I had/have wasn't the fact they let Chara go, it's they never even offered him a contract and basically said "find somewhere else to play". Muckler kept the coke crew around.

Weren't Hossa (and Havlat) traded due to money/cap issues ? We couldn't afford them ? I think Heatley had a cheaper contract at the time.
As for Chara over Redden my memory was hazy but:
- They could't afford both unless they both took reduced contracts, Redden would take a reduced salary identical to Chara's however Chara refused.
- With the new post lockout NHL, it was thought that a faster PMD like Redden would be more effective(wrong)
- Murray wasn't GM at the time but he advocated keeping Chara. Not sure if he took those concerns to Muckler but he was ignored.
Not that I am defending Muckler's decisions or anything but there were other reasons other than that is what old Muckler wanted.

Absolute trash and a lie. Pretty tough to refuse a contract when you were never offered one.

Question.. has Redden & Daug played enough games for Boston.. that if they win, their names will be on the Cup?

The Muckler hiring was the worst decision this franchise ever made. Blindsiding Hossa and trading him for Heatley who eventually walked on the team. Letting Chara walk. Trading Havlat for nothing. His drafting was dreadful... but then again how can you run a draft with only 2 full time scouts? Drafting Lee with M Staal & Kopitar still there? He was a fool...

All they have to do is play one game in the Finals to get their name on the Cup. Not sure Daugavins will though.

Havlat was a tricky one. He was asking for 6 million and there was no way we could give that to him. His problem was obviously that he didn't orchestrate a good enough trade, but Havlat wasn't staying no matter what basically.

No I realize Havlat intended to go to UFA.. BUT the return they got for him was ridiculous. It would have been better to demand a draft pick.. at least a 1st or at minimum a 2nd.. But the issue was he left nothing in the AHL to bring up to fill in roles so I guess he decided he needed players... but he should have gotten more than Hennessey, Preissing, Barinka...
