It was healed but then he had a setback and he was in pain. If/when the pain would subside no one knows.
And when it did there was no way in knowing whether he'd have another setback once he ramped up his workouts again.
Karlsson recovered faster than anyone thought possible. While he isn't 100% he can skate and play and no chance of injuring it unless someone cuts him again. It's only a matter of time when he is back to 100% and it might take a year or more.
With Spezza's back he could always have another setback at any time with no warning and I'm sure we'll be wondering if his back holds up every time a new season starts.
If he had a slipped disc (ruptured disc, bulging disc) and it was repaired, then if it was done right it should be fine. If he had more than one, and they only repaired the one that was most painful, then that's
normal back pain that is manageable with rest and physio. Basically what he's been living with forever. If he had another disc rupture then he would be heading for another surgery and we wouldn't see him until the fall.
So my guess is his "set-back" was a normal sore back that affected his rehab -- i.e. he could not do the exercises he needed to do to get the surgically repaired parts back in order (in order to access the ruptured disc the have to cut through tissue including some ligaments and muscles -- those need to heal and then must be worked back into shape).
He's not going to be 100% but, then again, he never really was. I just hope this doesn't affect his face offs.
